Historic floods of 2008

Towns are evacuating everywhere.....

My parents live on a steep hill up in waverly... so no water, but they are without power for at least 3-4 days, and half the town has evacuated.

I think the most of the town of cedar falls is evacuated as well as some of waterloo. They closed all of the bridges in town, so now everybody is driving outside of town by my house to get from one side of town to the other...... IT'S A BIG MESS.

Anyway.... I got some pictures from the town I work in (independence) it's not nearly as bad here.... but i'll post up some more pics when I get a chance.

heres one pic
i'm trying to figure out how to put a video link on here

OoO and one more I found.... I guess one of the bridges downtown waterloo is gone..

Somebody heard that the debris is caught on another bridge and may take it out too

Yeah, I think almost the southern half of Indiana must be under water. They even have Coast Guard choppers helping out. Our hopes and prayers go out to all who have suffered in this disaster.

We flew over the '93 floods--this is as bad or worse, right?

I remember they moved a town to higher ground last time. Too early for that kind of talk just yet.

worse than 93 and 99 in Waverly.... for sure... I talked to my boss when I got to work, because he owns the house I used to live in in waverly. He said theres 3 feet of water in the basement.... the closest it got in 99 and 93 was to the intersection... never came into the yard.

The Iowa River is predicted to crest 1 foot higher than the record set in 93 here at Marengo. At this time, I can still get through to Cedar Rapids, but not sure how much longer. It seems the Cedar has been taking the brunt of the floods this time, '93, it was the Iowa. The engineers at the Coralville Reservoir were smarter this time, they started letting out earlier, so our flooding isn't as bad this time around.

Ottumwa is evacuating some of the low lying areas too, like a couple of trailer courts etc because the corp of engineers is doubling the output of redrock to 60,000 CFS by tomorrow in order to keep up with the flow that is coming in especially with the salorville lake output being raised dramatically. AT least this time they are trying to go ahead and stay a head of it instead of wiring the spillways with explosives just in case (red Rock was wired in 93 in case saylorville dam broke)
Of coarse just like in 93 we got our flooding down here the fall before when 34 was closed a couple times do to whitebreast creek going over it, although the Chariton River is still over flood stage.

I got a question though... In 93 they claimed it was a 100yr flood and now it's happening again as bad and in some places worse (although most cities are better prepared this time) so even though I feel older then dirt I still want to know how that 100yrs got past me.

Well I finally drove around waterloo today and checked it out.

I'd seen independence because I work there, but I live right outside of waterloo, so I don't usually go into town until the weekend.

Anyways I took my camera with me and got quite a few pictures.. I don't want to put them all on this thread, so I made a tech albulm you can look at in my gallery.

Wish I coulda had somebody in another car taking pictures of me driving through some of this stuff. At least I had fun

but here's a couple of them.

That is just unreal. I really feel bad for everyone involved. Hopefully, the rain will stop for awhile so areas can dry out.

It's just one of those crazy years weather wise. We've already hit the temps we normally hit around july and have had 2 pretty rough thunderstorms in 2 days. I feel for those who have to lose so much because of all of the flooding.

That's wierd, we have had below normal temps, only a few near normal for this time of year, but then, it has to stop raining long enough to warm up...
Some local pics for me, not as dramatic, but shows the span near here.

the river is supposed to crest here in Quincy,Il sometime next week. they are predicting the same level as 93 and we lost some levees and lots of damage was done. they are better prepared this time,so maybe no major flooding will happen, and the low life that was pissed off at his wife/girl friend, whatever she was, and pulled sand bags off the levee so the levee would fail is still doing time in the big house as far as I know.
