Old Blue, it all depends on the profile your are looking for. Do you want 60 series or 50 series? When I worked as a tire toad. The widest tire that I could fit on a 2wd at that time was a 255/60R-15. I did see people put on 275/60R-15. However, they did rub when they turned to sharp.

I know of a stock '67 F-250 2WD running 285/75r16's, about 32" tall, and the front's pretty tight, but the back's got plenty of room. I think you could fit the 285's. most tire shops will let you "try before you buy" to make sure. It's at least worth asking. wheel offset can make or break the look though. The more offset, the further the wheel sticks out or in. Max tire width will depend on the wheel you run. The best way to be sure is test fit.

I have 285/75R16s on the rear of my 69 on stock steel rims from an 84 F250, and they fit with about 3/4" on either side. I wouldn't run that wide on the front, though. I ran 245s on the front before, and it was a little tight, but it also tracked poorly and was a royal pain to steer. I have 235/85R16s up front now, and they are great.
Narrower tires give better fuel mileage too-

i am thinking about putting 31x10.50R15 tires on the back of my 69 f100 2wd, will they clear the top of the fender wells if I load the truck down with hay/firewood/etc, to the point that the springs are bottomed out, or would they rub?

i got 33X12.5 all around and the back there is lots of room, but it is very close in the front, dont rub on roads but when i go down dirt roads with bumps i will hit the fender if my wheels are turned.

Just dont forget about diameter of rear tires , smaller will give you more rpms and less gas mileage , I am running 28 inch rear tires 275,60s 15s on 10 inch rims and 8s up front with 235,60s 15s . I am going to buy different rims with a 5 inch backspace to tuck in my tires in the back and run 6 inch up front . Then run a 29 inch bf tire on a 10 inch rim in back .

thanks for the info, i was just wondering, i have never ran 31x10.50 before, i usually run 225/75r15 on the front and 235/75r15 on the back of all of my old trucks, and i wanted to make sure that the 31s wouldn't rub, since i plan to haul a lot of hay and firewood in it and will have the springs pretty much maxed out.

im currently running 33x12.5/16.5 out back and 9.5x16.5 on the front.
when i have a pallet of salt on the truck it gets very close to rubbing.
once before i had 2 pallets of salt, every time i turned the chrome molding would rub/cut into the tires. i removed the chrome.

now i know only to carry 1 pallet of salt at a time. dont need slicing into tires since i have no spare, and no place to put one. lol

31"s look and ride great. I ran them on the 69 I used to have. Of course I never hauled much in it either.

Right now I have 295-50-15(N50x15) on the back w/8" rims. I am going to be taking them off cause I think they are too short, but are nice width. I am probably gonna get 295x65x15 and the same height in front w/ a 245x75x15 on 6" rims.

i think i'm going to forget about the 31x10.50 15's and put 30x9.50 15's instead, so i don't have to go with wider wheels. I want to stick with stock rims.
