Hard Start Cold

Hello

On a 1995 Ford F250 7.3L with a hard start cold problem, and it is only when it is cold. The reservoir is mostly empty and once the truck cranks long enough and fills the reservoir then assumably the high pressure pump the truck starts and runs fine and runs fine all day.

All of this seemed to start happening after the high pressure oil pump was changed (last December).

Could there be a problem with the install of the high pressure pump, or the wrong high pressure pump ?

Any thoughts on what I need to do to repair this problem would be great.

Could be the wrong pump. Any paper work that would show the part number used

I'd have to find the paperwork but as I recall it was a Bosch HP0008x, and that was used because the original IPR valve had an edge filter. Also the starting problem has been getting progressively worse since the pump was changed

If your memory is correct that is the problem
MWFI - FordPowerstrokeOilPumps
using that pump on a 94.5 or 95 will cause bleed down issues of the HPOP reservior. There is a mod that can be done to the timing cover to fix it as that pump is more desireable due to its high output but it needs be worked over to get rid of the bleed down issue.

After checking the paperwork it was an HP005X used with an Alliant Power AO63402 IPR.

The pump still is probably the problem. In 96 they changed some things for the timing cover and HPOP in how it keeps oil in the reservoir. I think that is still your problem. But I would like some others input. Even though this is not a 17* pump its still the one listed for the 96-97 trucks. Will that cause a drain back issue?

Let me get back to you.

I was starting to suspect that was the problem. I am not sure why things are mis-matched, because all the info I have calls for the Bosch HP005X if the original IPR did not have an edge filter. If the original had an edge filter then I should have used the HP004X, sounds like I need to go back to an HP004X and an IPR with an edge filter.

You could either get the right pump or do the mod in this write up. Doing the mod will set you up for if you ever need/want to go to the 17* Super duty pump. Plus it will probably be cheaper.
