1949 F7/8 with dump weight??

I put my uncle's Big Job in the swap meet section, but I was wondering what the weight of a Big Job with the dump box would be. In case if I can line up a trailer, I'd be curious to limits. Anyone?

Scott - I can give curb weights for F-7 and F-8 bare cab/chassis models, then you can add what you think the bed would weigh. Since it's a dump bed, I'm gonna guess you'll have the short 135" wheel base. If that's wrong, please give me the wheel base. The book says the F-7 would be about 6000 lbs. A little more or less depending on what wheels and tires are on it. Add 155 lbs for a two speed rear axle. For a F-8, it's +/- 6400 depending on wheels/tires, then add for the two speed axle, and add 300 for air brakes. So, you could be looking at up to 7000 lbs for the truck, and maybe 1000 plus for the bed. Stu

We had several of those being F8's Mine was (very rare) F8 H which means tripple
chassis. 12 ft Garwood dump body , full air, 11 00 20 tires tare weight on the scale
was 13,200lbs . Current trucks are 54 F800 10' Gallion full air 11 22 R5 tires tare wt
is 10,800 ==== 53 F900 full air 11-00-20 tires 10' Ox dump body comes in at 11,900
and that is yesterdays scale ticket at the plant. So I aggree it all depends on the
body and probably the options. I'll bet some of you are thinking what does "H" mean.
Easy answer, DSO stamped "H" tripple chassis Ruxtal torque bars on rear 2sp axle
and then an additional rivited plate on the drivers door. "Dept of U.S. Navy prop US
govt. Somerville Mass.
Hope it helped....

I would guess about 8500lbs with a dump bed. Should be able to haul it on an equipment trailer pretty easy

thanks guys, I'll see what the capacity of the equipment trailer is at work. I don't recall that truck having a long box or double axle. I'll see if I can get pics of it. He wants it outta there, and if worse comes to worst, I'll pull the front clip, engine, trans and leave the rest for the scrap guy, though it would be a shame, since this truck is in pretty good shape.

I looked over the trailer today, and didn't see any rating tag on it. And the guys who know weren't there today. I'll have to wait til Monday, now.

Be careful. My fire truck was brought to me on a triple axle equipment goose neck. One of the ramps got bent during loading. On the trip here from iowa, the 2x6 deck boards suffered a few losses. That F-7/8 Big Job dumptruck will be very heavy for anything less than a 20K tandem axle trailer, and hard to handle on anything less than a 1 ton dually. My fire truck was probably as heavy, or heavier than an F-7/8 of a few years earlier. I would go by big jobs weight estimates, and take into consideration that his equipment is updated, and likely a bit lighter than original.

Well, I was ready to go get the F8 dump this coming weekend. The other trailer at work has two 7000 lb axles under it. The F8 has a Baxter Co. box on it. It also has 23,000 GW, so without a payload, it should weigh less than 14,000 lbs....guesstimating. The issue that has come up is the width. I was thinking the track width on a smaller truck was 61", and I guess adding an extra 6" on each side, would net 73", as a rough guess to overall width. The trailer was about 80" or so, I may have to measure it more closely. Do these number seem ok? The catch is the bigger equipment trailer has a pintle hitch, and the company truck for it is a V10 gas hog Dodge dually with alot of miles on her, (and no radio). The much better/newer trailer is a 14,000 capacity trailer with a standard hitch on it and the company's new diesel powered Dodge dually has no problems hauling it around. Also that trailer sits alot closer to the ground. Width could be an issue, though.

Scott - The chart shows an F-8 is 95.52" wide at the rear duals.

Thanks a bunch, Stu. I may have to go with the big trailer, and sing to myself along the way.

Boy, I hope there's ramps for it.

You can haul it as long as the inner duals are on it. It isn't going to matter in anyway shape or form if the outer rear tires are not on the bed. The newer trailer should haul it as long as you'll have good contact with the inner tires. Also, MAKE DARN SURE you have it tied down well. If you have the ratcheting chain tensioners, USE THEM. Tie it off with four or more solid anchor points on the deck of the trailer, and DO NOT attach to something iffy on the truck. I have been training a new guy at work to be our after hours back up tow driver, and I have been butting heads with everyone over properly and safely attaching a vehicle to the tow truck or a trailer. You want to make sure that fore/aft and side to side movement is virtually eliminated. Good luck, and remember, you're responsible for all the motorists safety in at least a 400 yard kill zone around you. Meaning, if somethinn goes bad, you have the potential to take out anything within 400 yards.
