Hydraulic lifters, which to choose.

I purchased a Comp Cams 255DEH camshaft, springs, retainers, etc.
Was given a set of Ford lifters, M-6500-A303, and was wondering if I should
run them in my 400 or buy the Comp Cams lifters. Opinions?

I'd use the Ford ones if new.

I would use the Ford lifters, if they are new. Also use a good break-in oil, or use a ZDDP additive.

They used to recommend Shell Rotella T or sone diesel rated oil for break-in, but now even Diesel Rated oils may not have sufficient ZDDP for break-in. There are several companies that sell ZDDP additive or break-in oil with ZDDP. Some of these are Red Line Oil, Lucas Oil, Joe Gibbs Racing.

In another thread Tim Meyer said that he had a supplier of an oil with High ZDDP.

Search this forum for ZDDP.

They are new in an unopend box.
I've been running Mobil Delvac in my 1973 Landcruiser, thought I would run it
in the 400 when the time came. This PDF below is good reading, got it
from the Melling oil pump people, check it out.

The break-in procedure looks OK, but have some extra cooling fans available. A new engine can overheat while running at 2000 RPM without extra cooling.
