95 F150 engine swap 5.0 to 5.8L?
Hi all,
I have a 95 F150 4X4 5.0L, 4R70W combo. Motor runs good, but getting sense that lower is getting loose. Thinking of swapping a 96 5.8 in. At first, thought no way with that tranny cause different firing order than 5.0, but have heard that those 5.0's use the 351 firing order like my Mustang does so, if that is the case, thinking now computer would work fine. Haven't gotten around to verifying firing order, but if same, what other issues would prevent me from doing this swap? My thinking is that swap really shouldn't hurt MPG (I rarely haul heavy or tow with it anyway..commuter/winter snow crawler service) and the extra torque would be nice.
Otherwise, if the swap won't work, any thoughts on cam choice, heads, etc for the 302 if I pull it and do a freshen up rebuild on it. Oil pressure is good, virtually NO oil usage (or anything else for that matter except lots of gas of course) and truck has 140K on it. Not looking for a big HP bump (got the Mustang for fun) just a decent increase in torque without killing mileage. Thanks all for your advice.

If you want more TQ put the 5.8 in, there's nothing you can do to the 5.0 that will give it the 75-100ft/lbs advantage 50 cubic inches provides. If your truck is mass air then the biggest issue you will have is obtaining a flexplate to match the 5.8/4R70W combo. The 5.8 will drink more fuel around town though, that's just the way it is.

Been researching...looks like flexplate is the issue. Have seen stuff about using a Cr Vic one, etc. It looks like stock one for 5.0 (Ford PN E2AZ-6375-A) is used for either AOD or AOD-E trans so I don't understand why stock one from the 96 5.8 (D1ZZ-6375-A) wouldn't work for either trans too? Truck motor came from had an AOD in it. Keep reading about trashing the trans using the wrong set up, so gonna get this right before I start...can't afford to ruin the trans screwing around guessing. Someone has to have done this swap successfully along the way? HELP?!
