Exclamation I know.. 300 to 302 Swap Questions

Hey there, I know the story everyone says stay with the 300 i6 but mine has fried piston rings, valves, and headgasket. Smokes like a stackhouse, and burns more oil that I can keep up with so heres my questions. I have option to 351c or 302. No worries everyone my 300 will live another day just not today. I was wondering I read about perches and motor mounts, correct me if Im wrong but the motor mounts go between the engine and perch right? So that makes the perch the metal guy holding my motor mount? (dont know if I understand that right) In that case,
- I can bolt a 302 or 351 to my old "perches" w/ the use of new motor mounts correct?
- I have a Np435 Tranny that will to bolt to either the 351 or 302?
- Radiator, can I use my i6 or MUST have a V8 radiator?
- Ignition can I use the i6 ignition box?
- What else would I need to do this swap thats not mentioned above?

I appreciate all your help to give this ol' girl a new life on the road!

The 351c im pretty sure has different mounts and perches than the 300 or 302/351w engines. It also has a big block bell housing afaik.

It will be cheaper in the long run, just to put another 300 in it.

Not sure of the perches, but you will have to replace the radiator with a V8 one.

If it's a duraspark II ignition, with a BLUE grommet you can reuse it with a V8, using a BLUE gromet DSII.

You will need all the components for the 302 engine, air cleaner, power steering pump brackets, hoses, altenator brackets, air conditioner brackets etc...

Well looking around on craigslist found a 351w complete from carb to pan how bout that with my bellhousing? The reason I'm not looking for a 300 again is because I plan on rebuilding this one a putting it back in down the road, and using the 351 for a later project.

The perches are the brackets mounted on the frame. Your 300 perches will not fit, so you will have to go to the junkyard and grind the perches off a v8 truck, and install them on your frame. Then you can buy the rubber mounts to fit between the perches and the engine.

The 351w will fit the bellhousing. Make sure you get a flywheel or flexplate for the 351w, the 300 plate will not fit.

Make sure you get a rear sump oil pan on the 351w. If you get a 351w from a car, then it will have a front sump or a double sump, which will not work, and you will need to go to the junkyard and get a rear sump pan, dipstick, oil pickup tube, and main bearing stud to hold the pickup tube.

Then you will need;
exhaust
throttle cable
possibly a radiator
new radiator hoses
may need to extend some of the wiring

if the 351w is from an automatic, doesn't it need a flywheel to work with the manual?

A flywheel for a manual tranny. A flexplate for a automatic.

That guys that helps alot, the 351w I found is an older motor with a points system, and missing a carb but rebuild 5000 miles ago. Will I need the new distributor to work with my current ignition?

You will need a duraspark II Distributor to work with a Duraspark II ignition module.

Interesting, I did the swap 10 yrs ago I6 to 302. I can barely remember it. Do the V8 mounts go over the I6 ones? I remember chisiling some rivets off (I think off the V8 donor truck) to get the mounts off, and then bolting them on mine.
Now I want to go back to the 6.
Before this truck I had an F-100 w/I6 and manual 3spd w/OD. always new I should have never got rid of it.

If you decide to get a new distributor, consider our custom curved Duraspark Distributor built with our new Full Length Oil Impregnated Bronze Bushing. The full length bushing improves timing stability and spark scatter. If stock appearance is not an issue, take a look at our one piece D.U.I. Distributor. Whether you choose the Duraspark or the D.U.I., we curve each on a distributor machine based on your engine combination. Please see them at:

Also, there is now an excellent installation article on the D.U.I. Distributor on the Ford-Trucks.com site at:
