need a new turbo/intercooler combo, any suggestions?

Today, i replaced my glowplugs and while i was at it, i inspected the turbo. the wheel is looking a little ruff and the shaft is moving side to side almost half an inch! after reading many posts, it sounds like turbo replacement is my only option. I like the sound of the HX50 upgrade but it isnt an option for me do to lack of shop space/tools/and experience building a kit (2500+ seems a little outragous 2 me for the hypermax kit). So id like to get the D66 and a banks IC system. right now i have stage 1's, DP-Tuner, AFE intake, strait exhaust, and other miscelanious items. Stage 2's are a maybe someday but i have to get a new tranny and more money first. I do alot of towing so EGT's have been a HUGE problem in the past, mostly on the hills. But as my daily driver, i always have my foot into it looking for the black cloud in my mirror! I am more concerned about towing than i am about a race truck though. Is the D66 and the IC going to cause other problems for me or going to be a good combo? after all my research, i just want to make sure that im going to make the right decision here. any insight will be greatly appreciated!

It should make a great combo for what you are looking for. Even if you go up to 2's it will work well. The Banks cooler I think is a good cooler just kinda of high priced for my taste but I am dirt cheap! if you don't have the ability or resources to fab up an intercooler mounting and tubing then the Banks kit will be a good options. Or you could get the banks piping ($580) and get a 6.0 intercooler and save you lots of money but you would still need to do a little fabrication.

haha ya after reading a few or a closer to hundreds of your posts, i have gathered that you are cheap! i sometimes wish i was too. I was just a little concerned about the lag part of this equation. before this truck i had a 2000 SD 6 speed stock and i drove it for years. it had some impressive amounts of lag and i never caused any accidents! my 97 is an automaic so hopefully i wont see as much lag with all the stuff ive allready added to it

The biggest thing you can do to help with lag after installing an IC int he OBS truck is to move the MAP sensor hose from the intake manifold to the Compressor outlet or as close as you can to it. That made a huge difference in my truck!

Why does that make a difference?

Moving the MAP to the compressor output will provide more fuel earlier. When the turbo spools up, there is a pressure gradient between the compressor and intake manifold. If you have in IC, it will take longer for boost to be felt in the intake manifold because there is more volume to pressurize than w/out an IC. I'm not sure what the time lag is, but I'm thinking it's only fractions of a second, but every little bit helps!

if you want a good Turbo and Intercooler, here is what I have ordered and will be running with Beans Stage 2's. I have the Dom 66 turbo from beans, and I ordered the Hypermax intercooler from Dale at Tymar. Dale can also get turbos don't get the banks, they use plastic side tanks on them and they are over priced.

Another i/c that you might want to look at is the 7.3 spearco kit from blackwidowdiesel.com, its on sale for $1300 right now, which i think is about the same as the banks and it doesnt have the plastic end tanks. This is the kit that im lookin into.

The spearco is only for the cooler though as far as I know. Not tubing or intake y-pipe, Great cooler though!

"Our kit includes a coated, beaded hard pipe, two boots, and clamps to attach to the factory 7.3 intercooler pipes." that is what bwd's site says, so i would think that it is the entire kit. Correct?

actually after looking at it a little closer i dont think it is an entire kit, it says to attach to the factory pipes, which we dont have. So i guess i was wrong. But from what i hear it is a really good i/c

FFemt5287 the hyper max was $1445, comes with install kit. it definately looks like the spearco is the best quality. Hypermax looks good to but why is it so small? i understand volume may not be the best when it comes boost at turbo lag but can the hypermax be as efficent as the spearco or vice versa? im sure the banks is great but the more i read about the other IC's out there, it seems like the banks IC isnt as good of quality. maybe paying more for the name??? its too bad the spearco dosnt come with a kit
