Diesel Fuel Longevity

Diesel is now $5.25+ a gallon here. My truck is not being driven like it once was and I was curious as to how long diesel will go before turning bad. I am trying to keep the tank filled completely up, and refilling once I run about a ¼ tank out of it. At this rate I am using about a ¼ tank every 4-5 weeks. Will the occasional 6-8 gallons a month I refill it with be enough to keep the fuel “fresh?” Thanks,

if you use an additive like DK..I have seen diesels sit for a year and pop right off and run good...i would think you would be ok...when you do start her up.. take a good long ride to get the oil temps up and burn up any moisture that's in there....

you're biggest problem will be microbial growth..
and you're going through it at too fast of a rate to be worried about it..

The ULSD is real susceptable to biological growth. They sell an additive to kill it off and prevent more growth. That is the only real problem with older fuel in diesels. I have an outside storage tank on the farm and treat it once a year. I have diesel in there that was bought last fall and no issues with it.

I use kleen in my fuel. It makes a significant difference on fuel economy. I wonder if it helps when I let it sit for long periods of time.

you can get ULSD (ultra low sulfur diesel ) at any fuel stop..thats what diesel is called now.you can thank EPA for that...it used to be LSD (low sulfur diesel )... DK makes stuff to keep things clean..

I get my BIO-Treatment from my bulk fuel supplier, but one of the stations in town sells it also. One quart teats a 300 gallon tank. Any auto parts store should also be able to get it if they don't stock it already.

I get my biocide fuel treatment at West Marine, or you can get micro-organism killer at any good Marine place, as marine diesel systems are a lot more subseptable to mold and other crap due to the constant moisture environment. I paid about $24 for a bottle, and I also use Diesel Kleen gray every tank or so. However probably the best system cleaner is biodiesel.
