I have a new 2008 5.4L, 3V 6.5' bed, 4X4 XLT. I am looking for some increase in fuel MPG. Cuently i am getting about 14 city 17 hwy. What have ya'll replaced or added that has helped.

to be honest with you, your not going to get much better than that. these trucks all seem to vary based on factors like driving style, tires, location, weather, fuel type etc etc.... but your right in the middle of the curve.

 

Unfortunately, Matt is right. I WISH I could get 14 city out of my truck. Keep unnecessary cargo out of it, proper tire pressure (I upped mine to 40psi on the Scorpions), go light on the foot and that's the best you can do.

My research has shown that none of the more popular modifications do anything for gas mileage.

Personally, between my F150 and my wife's '06 Expy I'm at the point were it would cost less to park the rigs, buy/lease a couple Focus' (or is it Foci?) for $199/month each.

 

Your right on que with my thoughts but my loving bride ain't buying my logic. She loves her Expy.

I don't know what you're doing on the hwy, but keep your foot out of it... I have gotten as good as 19mpg with the big tires, and a little over 20 w/ the stock tires... you should be a little higher than that since your truck might be lighter (guessing reg cab or supercab?).

I get around 15 city (staying off the gas) or 11 if I'm in it. I get 20 highway if I use my cruise control and do 65-70. I've gotten 12 highway if I have a strong headwind which we get a lot of in Northern Colorado. Everything is dependent.

I have the same truck, with the Lariat trim.

 

I have actually gotten better than both of the numbers i posted. I am just saying those are the average. I also have the long wheel base 6.5' bed and its a supercrew. My driving style is very timid not very hard on it at all. My hobby is to build mustangs, race them and then sell them cause i get bored. I just hear a lot of different stories of people either changing there exhaust, cold air intake or maybe some programming and getting better MPG. I just want the facts on what works and what doesn't or maybe nothing works.

 

I also have the 6.5' bed, and a Screw....The CAI's and exhaust won't help with your mileage. Might make it sound cool though. Ford puts a lot of money into their intakes and exhaust. The people who sell aftermarket parts would love to tell you differently though.

 

I am glad i asked the question about MPG increase. I was really considering spending some money on some upgrades. Thanks for everyones responses. My truck only has 3200 miles on it so maybe some more miles will help.

I've got a little over 4000 miles on mine, and it hasn't changed since day 1. I run 36 PSI on my tires all the way around...that would be your cheapest mod, and probably the most effective.
