Looking for better MPG.

I'm doing a little research for a friend. He has a 97 F150 with a 5.4. He says he is only getting 12 MPG and is wondering what he can do to improve it.
Is this about normal for this truck?
I had mentioned maybe going with daul exhaust but he's worried about the noise. I also thought about a K&N filter or cold air intake setup. Lastly I figured there would be a computer chip or a hypertech programmer that could squeez a few more MPG out of it.
Any tips or suggestions would be great.
Please include brands and maybe good places to get these things.
Thanks for your help guys and I must say this is my first time here and you guys have a very nice board here. Congrats.

Looking for better MPG.

Check the online store in this site and take a look at the superchip... I had one and my mileage went up 1-1.5 MPG plus gained about 25 ponies

Looking for better MPG.

i get 11 in the city and drive as hard as i can. "speed is fun" i have a free flowing exhaust. a gibson single out,, has a nice lower throttle to it,, k and n filter. all that and i dont think im getting better milage, but for sure better performance. also, it depends on how u broke in the truck,, i was grandpa driver until 6000,, then let her loose and she rocks. break in is key to any engine.
