Ball joints and wheel hubs, oh my!

I've been having major problems with the front suspension on my Excursion for a few months now.

The steering didn't stay true when turning or changing lanes, it was making noises indicating something was wrong, etc. Plus, I have 143K miles on the original setup (not inclusive of the V codes and Bilsteins I installed a while back), well over the miles most get out of the ball joints on these SuperDuty's.

The problem got so bad I had to deadline the vehicle for a few weeks until I had the money to order the moogs from www.Powerstrokshop.com

Well, I ordered the kit and it arrived last week. Today I took the rig to my buddy's tire and suspension shop to have them installed. Unfortunately, this trip was gonna cost me a grip, because when they put the Ex on the lift, they found both wheel hubs were gone.

Well, they were worse than gone. They were completely trashed.

The passenger side was so bad, it had affected the interior face of my cryo treated Powerslot rotor and the interior brake pad. The rotor's interior face had to be resurfaced, and the interior pad had to be sanded flat.

Now I know why I was getting that brake pulse feel again. I had cured that warped feeling before, by swapping out the POS OEM rotors for the Powerslots a while back.

Anyway, $1,300 dollars later and I have new hubs, Moog upper and lower ball joints (greasable zerks FTW!), brakes reset back to specs, and a front end alignment.

All is well again, except for my bank account. Life support will be pulled for that poor sucker next week.

Stewart,

Sorry you ran into the issues...but glad you got it all straightened out.

Now at least you can properly maintain the ball joints thru fresh grease!...don't know what Ford was thinking in the OEM design...grease zerks are CHEAP!!!

I know where your economic stimulus check has gone! doh!!!

Good luck.

joe.

Joe, it's worse than ya think. My check was already spent on my Lightning!

Hey, at least the front suspension should be good to go for the next 100K + miles!

I have to do my ball joints. I am not looking forward to it. But the new air compressor I just bought should make easy work out of it. Like you said stewart, your good for another 100,000. Sucks shelling out the coin, but at least you have peace of mind.

Yeah, especially since it's my wife's daily driver.

Good luck on your install bro. I feel lucky I made it to 140K + miles before I needed to replace my stuff.

If its any consolation I had to replace both of my hubs and a u joint when I bought mines. The 4X4 didn't work and I thought it was going to be something simple (and cheap). Turns out they also had to replace the vacuum solenoid and repair the wiring for it. But my ball joints were ok suprisingly.

Curious, how many miles were on the Ex when you purchased it?
