2005 Ranger XL 4cyl engine quite at 40 mph?
Good day to all at FTE
On the drive to work 5:00 pm rush hour on I5 my 05 2.3l XL 2WD just quit, coast over to the left side and it will not start. Cranks good, checked for fuel at rail (squirts), ½ tank of fuel, when engine cranks it shakes like it might start but no go. Any thoughts? Thanks.

How many miles? An '05 is awfully young to have a timing belt break, and you'd probably have heard that.
When you crank the engine, does the tach move (if you have a tach)?
I'd suggest removing a spark plug and grounding it to the block to see if you have spark, then check the timing belt via the inspection cover, then possibly look at the camshaft position sensor. In addition, if you can get ahold of a code reader (Walmart now sells them), any codes would be helpful.

Thanks for the reply. I should have stated 65,000 miles just about all freeway. Did not notice the tack moving but engine did appear to fire. As you stated to young for the belt and did not act like a belt when cranked. I suspected the camshaft position sensor. Oh well caught a ride on time to work the night shift till 0600. Called a towing company 180+ miles round trip and they have gotten if off the freeway and home before the state towed it. I will update when it is back on the road. Thanks!
I did not see a check engine light, but we have a code reader in the F350 SD PS and will try to check. Thanks!

Looks like this one is on me. Truck has 65000 miles and is out of warranty as far as I understand. According to the dealer the computer showed no record of the event. They do have me carrying a fuel pressure test kit, spark gap test tool just incase it happens again might be able to determine if it is electrical or fuel related. Thanks for the reply.
PS I thought the roadside assistance is only good for 3 years / 36000 miles correct?

They must have upgraded it for '07 model year? My powertrain warranty is for 5yr/100,000 km(63,000mi) and the roadside assisstance is 5yr/100,000 km. I'm in Canada. I've got the owners manual in front of me. I'll cry with you if your only a couple of thou beyond the warranty. Check the glove box ownners manual. The trucks' only 2yrs old for Pete's sake.

Update
Update 1500 + miles since last event with no issues, on the way home this morning stopped to fill up gas tank took 11.3 gallons. Went about 1 mile from the station and it just shut down. Connected fuel pressure gauge and had 0 psi, cycled key a few times 0 psi, banged on bottom of tank, cycled key 0 psi, reset inertia fuel shut off and heard a bi-metallic click, turned key on and 65 psi fuel pressure and truck started. Confirmed with the technician he did not have to reset it when it was towed in.

Well I just bought an 07 Ranger 2 days ago and we went ahead and added a 7 year/100,000 mile Ford Premium Care warranty for $930. Sorry to hear about your bad luck but it makes me feel a little better about my warranty purchase. I'm also hoping some of you guys will come on here and tell me how RARE of an incident you had and that I'll probably never need my warranty.

The only time it's ever not started, I got it running within 2 minutes and immediately drove it over 100 miles, to where I could use a relative's garage to fix it right, and that was around 220k miles.
Extended warranty would have been throwing money away on this truck.
