OBD II Readers

What is the difference between these 2 readers? What is the benifit of having the "CAN" with the reader?

The $40 unit does OBDII only. OBDII was from 96 or 97 until 05 or 06 (I could be wrong here). CAN is the newer protocol used from 05 or 06.
