Would you get a 6.4, if you have nothing now?

Would you get a 6.4, if you have nothing now?
I have been looking, well more waiting for the $$, on the new trucks. I know that Ford put a lot of research into the 6.4. Driving trucks well over a million miles. But I see this ticking issue being described here. This is the first time I have heard of any issues outside of the initial problems when they first came out.
Is the ticking really it, or are there other issues with this motor?
To make the decision more interesting, Ford is talking about their new motor in 2010. That motor will be theirs, not Harvister's.
You just want to get a decent vehicle, but the mentioned ticking problems have me worried. Plus the new motor coming out soon... Just not sure what is the best option here.
My timetable is end of the year to get one... I love the interior and options on the 08, which is why I am not too oexcited about getting an 04-07 one.
Opinions?

you sort of answered your own question "if you have nothing now". The 6.4 has needed a tweak or 2 but it certainly hit the market in better shape than the 6.0 did. Im sure when the 6.7 comes out there will be a few tweaks on that also. Remember that happy owners usually dont come on these sites to brag about how happy they are. These forums are a tool to find help with problems, compare experiences, etc. The point is that only a few trucks are having problems while hundreds of thousands are pounding asphalt as we speak. I have yet to hear anyone say they regret trading in a 7.3 or 6.0 for this new 6.4. Im sure there are a couple out there but its going to be rare.

I bought my 350 in Feb 07. Had one of the very first ones. I had lots of problems with it, and finally ended up with the one I have now. This one has been near flawless, (also a Job 1 but 6/07 build). I finally learned my lesson after buying the 5.4 3 valve in 04 and the 350 in 07. My advice is if you wait for the 6.7 that Ford is building, buy it in the second run or the following year. Give them some time to find problems that they missed in testing. As for the 6.4, if I needed another truck I wouldn't hesitate to buy another. Seems like most of the bugs are worked out and it is a great machine.

Look at the V-10 gasser versus the 6.4 PSD. The gasser should be $5-6000 less and get close to same MPG from what I see posted. Get a 6.4PSD if you regularly tow over 12-15000LBS if not then V-10 will do the same as a PSD and save money on the cost of ownership. Plus the V-10 is a proven design.
To answer your question NO I would not get a 6.4.

Well thanks all. No matter what, I will not be getting anything no sooner then end of year. Who knows what the gas siutation will be by then. From a buying point of view, hopefully not good and they still need to push them out the door.
The other issue for me is I am a big time manual tranny guy. That means I will have to order my truck. That means I lose out on many incentives. I still can buy it via the X Plan so I have at least that in my favor.

Ahh another stick jockey. The 6.4 matched with the 6-speed is a great combination. Loved mine since the day it came in.
Like posted above, if you wait until the next motor you'll have more emissions crap to deal with. Including urea injection into the exhaust which has to be refilled every oil change.

I love my truck, ordered it exactly the way I wanted it, and it does everything I ask of it. If I knew a year and a half ago what I know now, I'd probably opt for the 06 Dodge, 5.9L mega cab dually. Aftermaket help can bring it up to par or better than the 6.4L, and it's a bulletproof engine. Much better mileage, just not as nice an interior.

yer darn tootin. Love the truck. Fuel economy sucks in all diesel p-ups now thanks to the EPA and their tree huggin road to glory. Better they should shut down all those idling 18 wheelers in the overnight rest areas. Oh well, I'll stop driving my 6.4 when they pry my cold dead fingers from the wheel.

If you have nothing now then sure go get one. If you have something now you may or may not want to wait. I don't know what all differences there are between the IH & Ford 6.4's but I'd be scared of getting parts & their prices a few years down the road after Ford drops IH.
Of course the other side of the coin is the 6.4 looks to have the minor bugs worked out, and while the mileage may stink, the 2010's will have even more emissions junk on them. The 2009 MY may be the best Ford has to offer for the next several years until the new bugs get worked out.
