Casting Numbers

i need help from the experts to identify one of the flathead sixes i have. the casting numbers all have a prefix of 8MTH, then the basic number of 6015 or 6050, etc. according to the part it is on. i can't find anyone who knows for sure what this engine came out of. i have been told it might be canadian, as in 1948 mercury truck. this engine is in an 8n ford tractor funk conversion. i need to find an original carb for it but i don't know what to look for. i know it isn't a truck but all help is greatly appreciated about this one.

No expert here, but I do have a shop manual covering the 48-52 models. It shows the 8MTH to be the large six cylinder - 254 CI. This was used in the F5's and maybe the F6's. From the manual's description I believe it could be either a single barrel'd updraft carb (cab over engines and F3 parcel deliverys) or a single downdraft carb (conventional cabs).

Does your engine have a mounting surface on top of the intake or on the bottom? That will tell you which you need. The manual has pretty good drawings of the carb - I think I could identify one on the basis of the pictures.

You can purchase a shop manual here online at motorhaven.com or any of several suppliers. It has complete specs, parts numbers, etc related to the M series engines, and you'd use it often. I'd copy/scan them for you, but my son took my scanner off to college with him and I haven't replaced it.

The casting suffix numbers are as you suspect, just basic part numbers. For instance, the one you found marked 6050 must be the head. Of all the ones you noted, only the 8MTH is siginificant. The carburator part number you're looking for is: 8MTH 9510-A
Hope this helps some.

i have an origional carb that came off my 254. i don't want to part
with it but i'll be happy to try and idenify it if you like. it is the single barrel downdraft holley carb.the carb was mounted on a govener.
the engine was only avalible on an F6 from the literature that i have. where did you find the engine? i've been trying to find a spare engine. tim

thanks for the reply. there was no governor or carb on the engine when i got it. i bought it in indiana as a funk conversion, with all the attaching hardware, for a ford tractor. it is a sweet running engine and now in the tractor it is a real stump puller! i know what to look for now.

i didn't realize this one was a bigger displacement than my 7HA engine. they look about the same. the 8MTH does have a downdraft manifold. i will check out the shop manual you mentioned for the M series and will see if the carb rebuilders have one of that part number at the next swap meet. thanks for all the info.

I have a Ford book on the 32-54's but it doesn't say exactly which carb they put on the 6's.

The Stromberg's & Ford's(Chandler Groves)were used on V-8's

As far as carb application goes for that year> I have tractor carb applications.

i have several flathead V8's (even one in an 8N tractor) in my collection of ford treasures using the ford (c-g) and the stromberg two barrels; even one running on l.p. gas. i couldn't use one of that type carb on the 6 cyl. unless an adapter plate was made for the intake mount. also, i'm afraid it might run too rich being a two barrel. hooking up the throttle linkage would not be a problem. i'm not sure about the flow rates of these carbs-any thoughts?
in your tractor carb apps, do you show a one barrel downdraft for these years or just the normal one barrel updraft (marvel-schebler?) for the 4 cylinder tractor engine? thanks, will.
