If you go back through the years, Ford always rates the automatic transmissions with a higher towing capacity than the manual transmission in an otherwise identical truck.

Definitions:

GVWR - Gross Vehicle Weight Rating: Maximum rated truck weight, with cargo, passengers, trailer tongue weight, fuel and pets.

GCVWR - Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating - Combined GVWR of truck AND trailer.

GAWR - Gross Axle Weight Ratings - Maximum load on each axle.

All of these ratings must be taken into consideration when deciding if your truck can handle the load you are considering, or the trailer. Your owners manual goes into more detail on how to make this decision.

Get yourself a copy of Ford's Trailer Towing Guide. Weigh your truck as it will be loaded while towing, this includes you and passengers, subtract your truck weight from the GCVWR listed in the guide and you will know exactly the weght you can tow legally. The key word is LEGALLY! You get in an accident overweight and your insurance may well be null & void and if there is an injury involved you could lose everything. Not good.
