351W to a 429 swap

My 351 is very tired and I have recently found a 429 with a newly rebuilt c-6 in a 1972 Country Squire for $1000.00. I am looking at a budget rebuild and want more horse power and torque. My research shows that the stock 429 will give me a 100HP increase and a 150 ft/lbs of torque increase. My truck is a 1988 Bronco and it has EFI. My questions are

1) What has to be done to go from EFI to carb?

2) If I change motor mounts will the 429 and it's tranny bolt up to my existing driveline?

3) Can I get the same hp from the 351 for near the same cost if a just rebuild it and the tranny. My engine and tranny have 190,000/mi.

I can get parts very cheaply, but as I said I am on a very limited budget ( laid off). My truck lost all oil prssure today and leaks about 1 qt of oil every time i park it. That is what prompted all of this. Thanks for your input.

EFI to carb..you have to scrap the efi stuff, ecu, tidy up the wireing. Anything run by or effected by the ecu has to be tended to, like the speedo. In your case, your speed is probably still cable driven. Instrument wiring will be interesting.

I doubt your 2wd C6 will work with your TC. Look under it if you don't know, but isn't your TC married to your trans?

You can get the same HP, but at higher RPM. YOu could go 393 and end up with decent low end torque, and keep your lighter engine and all systems going.

Does the wagon run? Drive it for a while till you get work. If it drives good enough, (like a hippo on wet clay is normal) you can prep your truck and decide if you want to fiddle with the 351 or 429'er.

Thanks for the input. The wagon runs, but is not road worthy. I din't quite understand what you meant about a 2 wheel drive tranny though. All trannies are two wheel drive it's the tc that makes your 4 wheel drive right? Are 429 parts as difficult to find as 351 parts? Also this way I get a newly rebuilt tranny instead of having to shell out more money to rebuild my exisitng tranny and rebuild the 351 as well. Once again thanks for your input I appreciate it.

A "2wd" transmission has a tail shaft houseing (in the case of a C6) that accepts the slip yoke of the drive shaft.

A"4wd" trans married to the TC bolts to the TC and there is a completely different shaft and housing. According to other posts here, changing a C6 requires a complete teardown.

Parts for 351W and the 429 (same as the 460) are plentiful. You may have to buy them via the internet, but there are tons of parts for these.

Look in the respective forums and after a few threads you'll see a wide variety of stuff, and a lot of what works and what jerks info.

I'd still stick with the 351, and do some horse trading on the wagon parts, jmo, ymmv.
