timing of 292 which pitston do you go by 1 or 8 tdc with closed valves

i got knew gears with the timing marks and put it togather. I put my number 1 piston tdc and my valves where closed . But my timing marks dont align . is it timrd at a different piston like 8 or the keyways. anybody have any info

the timing marks on the chain dont align at 6 and 12 like the later model engines. the 292 marks align with 12 spaces between the marks. i forget which side the marks align on though. sorry its been 10 years since i built a 292.

The timing marks line up with the chain marks on the oil filter side of the engine according to my '60 shop manual.

Maybe this will help. I think that the 272 and 292 are the same.
