changing rear differential fluid

I pick up 4 quarts of the 75W-140, i was looking at Guzzle's website and it calls for Ford's XL-3 friction modifier. The gear oil i bought says limited slip and it's synthetic, but my question is will i need to add the friction modifier?

Thanks

Hey Dave, how's it going? I got Valvoline, they had some friction modifier, but it wasn't the kind that said XL-3 though

If it says it's for LS I would try it without modifier the Royal Purple I use in mine doesn't need any modifier. Got tired of only spinning one tire did ya?

Don't know about increasing your mileage but it will increase the life of your diff.

Ok i will try it out and see how it goes without the modifier. I take it that it doesn't have to be the CL-3 from Ford? Yep still just one tire, lol

Ya Mike if it chatters you can always add a few ounces of modifier later, you don't want to add to much or you will end up the way you are now with a one wheel peel.

Cool Dave, so that should do the trick then. Thanks I didn't know that syn gear oil was so expensive; little over 13.00 a quart.

Duh!! Makes since now. Changing the fluid and adding less of the limited slip lub makes more since now. My fingers got faster then my brain. Anyways is the dealer the only place to get the additive for the limited slip?

Nothing but a rebuild will fix a diff that is worn out. Now if the fluid is going bad, replacing that can bring her back to life. Besides, if you have any kinda mileage on the truck, it is a good idea.

I used RP and it didn't need any modifier. Whatever you choose, it must be synthetic and any modifier must be compatible.

Now is a good time to replace the cover with the newer finned one. I sanded and painted the stocker as I did mine right about the time the new covers were coming out. PITA. This procedure is covered in guzzles page.

A few points, my diff had about 60k on it and lots of crud. I cleaned it out with lots of brake parts cleaner. Also, pull the VSS sensor and clean the fuzz/crud off of that. That hole makes a good fill hole too as it is on top. There are a few pics in my gallery of what I am talking about.
