Tachometer acting up?

The tach on my 95 stroke is acting up. When I start the truck it will shoot to 1500 rpm and stay there soemtimes the whole time I drive around. Occasionaly it will drop the the actual rpm and rise and fall as I drive correctly bet them sometimes it will jump right back to around 1500 or 1600 and stay there. Is the tach going bad or fault wireing??? I know it is idleing fine but it bugs me that i cant always see my correct rpms. Thanks

Could be the tach or the wiring. Pretty simple gage, It gets it's signal right from the PCM. The PCM get it's info from the CPS. A good scanner will tell if the signal is good coming from the PCM. If the engine is running OK the CPS is not your trouble.

My WAG is a bad tach.

Remove and re-seat the 2 large connectors on the back of the instrument cluster.
The 14 pin black connector is the one you want to look at.
