geting great fuel millage

well it started off bad but only getting better from bismarck most the way to great falls i was bucking a strong headwind while travling 65 and only managing about 12mpg after the wind died off it jumped to about 16 this is towing an empty 20 ft car hauler trailer. then i picked up an 1941 oldsmobile and am now in butte mt, and managed to get 19 while towing the trailer loaded with the car. slowed down to 60 witch putts the needle right on the 2k mark. and on the long down hills i threw it into newtral a few times and coasted to 80mph on the realy steep uphills i downshifted to 4th and used pretty light throttle to keep 55 witch put my rpms at 2500. if i can keep up 19mpg on this whole trip ill be amazed.

oh and here is somthing i thought of while i was driving today, on the under 2k thing, i think the better fuel millage at under 2k is becouse the slower the engin is turning the more it allows for a more compleet burn thus making more energy per givin amount of fuel. anywhaz leave your responses ill be back next time i get a chance to get online, im going to sleep

I must be doing somthing wrong here. I have a 1995 f350 4x4 auto trans and i am manageing 15mpg city. I have the 3.5" downpipe with a 4" exhuast with MPRB muffler. I also have a Tony wildman chip that I usually put on the daily or ecomonic setting. I have the 6637 air filter also. When I drive i keep it under 2k and I never see boost. What is the deal??? How can people be pulling thousands of pounds uphill and still pull of better MPG than me. At 4.39 a gallon it would be nice to pull of anything better. Another note the milege has not changed any since adding the chip and exhuast wich I added the same. now i have only gone through one tank. are these mods gonna take a little time for me to see a MPG difference???? Just wondering what I can do better

Well here's the deal. 15 MPG around town ain't bad for an auto. I get 16 to 17 and MAYBE 18 every now and then in the city. Highway I can pull 19 @ 75, 20 @65 and a whopping 22 @ 55. (all with the CC set and 100 Mile trip) Auto's almost always get worse mileage that standards (loosing power through the TC). also a big difference highway VS city. so you're really not in to bad of shape. What fuel pressure you running at? Done an FPR shim?

FPR= Fuel Pressure Regulator. There is a spring inside the wears out over time and you loose some fuel pressure. This can reduce the atimozation of the fuel and give you a bit less fuel economy (only a half to maybe 1MPG, but every it counts!) there is a schrader valve on the side of the fuel bowl. Using a dial pressure gauge (not the "pencil" like ones you use to check tires) check the pressure. Chances are it will fluctuate between two PSI intervals. Mine was 55-70. I shimmed mine and got is up to 65-80. Optimal is 75 PSI and not much higher or else it can weaken the fuel pump quicker. As a shim, you can use a BB from a BB gun. Install directions are located here....

sorry but 20 mpg seems a little ridiculous for a 10+ year old 7000lbs truck with a 444 cubic inch motor... or maybe its just me. 14 seems to be about my best ever.

It can be done. Controlled conditions. setting the cruse control for 2 hours at 55 MPH, unloaded with no stops get me 22 MPG. Believe it or not but it can be done. If I creep up to 65 it goes down to 19-20ish. 75 down to 17-18. truck has 3.55's. around town keeping it under 2K i can get 15-17. Highway vs. City makes a BIG difference. at almost $5 a gallon, i'll take as many miles from a gallon of diesel as I can get.

I consistently get 18.7 and never a full tank of fuel burnt with out some kind of a load I get 12 to 14 hauling th 236 CAT on my 20' goose neck 12,000lbs load, most of our roads are 6% or better grade and always in the mountains, a 120 mile trip to phoenix is over 5,000 ft of elevation change if it was just one strait mountain. it is closer to a total of 12,000 ft change with all the up and down and I still maintain 12 mpg loaded. that same trip empty is 18 to 19 mpg

No, it's not. Go drive it on the highway at a constant speed for an extended period of time. I bet you'll see much better mileage. Around town and 2000RPM+ shifts are what kills fuel mileage. these trucks can fluctuate in mileage from 10 (heavy towing) all the way up to low 20's. Every truck is a little different but all are capable.

BTW I've only gotten 22 MPG TWICE because I hate running my truck at 55. Way to slow for me. It likes 75+ MPH (runs great at around 2K on the highway) so I usually get 17-18 on the highway

one thing about my fuel millage tests iv been doing is there compleet full tank runs without ever stopping somtimes i will run both tanks without stopping and thats like 800 miles non stop iv had a few tank fulls in the 16's one in the 13's and my best so far is 20.89 lightly loaded and im not bull****ting on that, but it was a back to back tank run, i ran out one tank wrote the millage switched tanks and reset the trip and ran that tank without stopping till it was empty. and that was off of the second tank with a fair share of long downhill streches that surly helped.
