busted

My f250 4x4 is busted.

All I know right now is the engine (5.7 liter) is reving up and down and wants to stall. Running very ruff.

My son was drive at hiwayspeeds, when he got off he strated experiencing the symptoms.

seems like the timing chain has jumped a tooth.

Thoughts?

Any codes? Does your "Check Engine" light come on. This is the first place to check. This will tell you where to look.

And who was he racing when it happened?
The net is full of stories about how cars mysteriously break when the "Kid" was using it.
Ha ha ha. Don't ya remember when you where a "Kid"?

Maybe some bent valves from the high revs? LOL

could have jumped a tooth, line up mark for tdc on balancer and pull the cap. it should be either pointing to the #1 position or #6

run your codes.. running up and down and trying to stall, you probably only have something like a Throttle Air Bypass stuck.... run your codes.

Did I mention you should run your codes?

I was also told if the chain had jumped a tooth the truck would not run at all and the engine would spin freely due to the lack of compression.

And no i still havenot been able to look into the problem. I am hoping to take it to have the codes read tonight.

Forget about the timing chain jumping a tooth that's nearly impossible, the chain would have to be worn so bad it would have been hitting the timing cover and making a lot of noise for a long time.. you'ld know it was bad. Check your codes and look for more obvious things like arcing plug wires or a failing fuel pump.

A status check here.

The check engine light is not on.
no codes yet.
ruled out timing chain. (no noise has compression)
fuel pump is ok (switched from front to back tank without a change in symptoms)

I hope to at least check for a vacuum leak around the seal tonight. Aparently these engines have a tendency to blow out the seals around the intake.

No leak around the intake but there was a component (I don't know what it is or does) that has vacuum connections. it was making a humming noise after the truck was shut off, sounded like a electircal connection hum or an old stereo hum. I took it off cleaned it internally with PB Blaster and the little filter on top. reinstalled.

also cleaned all fuss stabs in the fuss box under the hood and battery posts per someones suggestion.

Checked the timing with a light and adjusted it, tried at 0 degrees and 10, did not seem to matter. Where I thought the mark should be the truck ran like crap, hafe way down the scale it runs great.

All syptoms are gone except the check engine light, I got to Auto Zone just as they closed so hopfully today I will get that done or have to do some counting.

My first thought also was a vacuum leak or bad/dirty device. I had to go through all of mine, taking the hoses on and off till I found the culprit, cleaned it up and it was fine after that. Don't forget to charge your kid $12 for something/anything you can make up, keeps them cridders in check. I just made mine buy his own $105 tire that he wrecked, he'll be more careful next time........Won't he? HA, who am I kidding!
