Do you know if the cruise recall has been done on this truck? I show fuse #4 under the hood is
4 20A* Trailer Tow Backup Lamps, Trailer Tow Park Lamps
Does the cruise quit working when this fuse blows? Is this with or without a trailer hooked up?
You can test your cruise control system by doing this:
Self-Test Diagnostics — Excursion, Super Duty
WARNING: This test is a key on engine off (KOEO) test only that is conducted in park only with emergency brake fully engaged.
Enter Self-Test Diagnostics by depressing the speed control OFF switch while turning the ignition key ON, making sure the engine does not start and is not running. The speed control indicator on the instrument panel will flash once to indicate that speed control module entered the diagnostic mode. FIVE ADDITIONAL FLASHES AT THIS POINT INDICATE A DEFECTIVE SPEED CONTROL SERVO. Release the OFF switch.
Press the remaining switches in this sequence: ON, RESUME, COAST and SET/ACCEL.
IF THE "ON" SWITCH IS NOT DEPRESSED WITHIN FIVE SECONDS AFTER ENTERING THE DIAGNOSTICS MODE, THE MODULE TIMES OUT AND THE PROCEDURE MUST BE STARTED OVER.
The speed control indicator lamp will flash as each switch is depressed. Press each switch in the sequence immediately after the indicator light goes out for the previous switch.
A lamp flash with the last button (SET/ACCEL) indicates that the STATIC test passed. If the lamp does not flash with the last button and there are no additional flashes of the lamp, the switch is defective.
If the lamp does not flash with the last button, and additional flashes occur, follow the chart below for trouble codes:
2 Flashes - BPP defective, circuit is defective, brake applied, CPP switch or jumper (if equipped).
3 Flashes - Deactivator switch is open or circuit defective.
4 Flashes - Vehicle speed signal is out of range or circuit is defective.
Immediately after the STATIC test, the speed control servo does a DYNAMIC test by automatically actuating the throttle lever from 8 mm (0.315 in) to 12 mm (0.472 in) of travel from the idle position. During the DYNAMIC throttle pull, observe throttle movement to witness any binding or sticking of the speed control cable and correct connection of speed control cable to throttle lever. Make sure the THROTTLE RETURNS BACK TO IDLE POSITION.
Let me know how many flashes you get (if any) and I'll find the proper pinpoint test to check from there.
Return ignition switch to the OFF position and proceed to the Symptom Chart.

Unfortunately, the speed control light doesn't come on when I do the test you described.
To answer your questions:
- The recall has not yet been performed on the truck
- It blows the fuse when I engage the speed control without the trailer attached. (I have not tried it with the trailer attached)
- The parking lights on the trailer do not work even with a good fuse.
I'm assuming your first comment will be to get the recall service done. Do you believe this will fix the problem?
Did you try the self test with a good fuse in the box? If you've got a short in the wiring it may send a signal through the brake circuit. That might explain why the test didn't work. Also make sure you have the parking brake fully engaged for the test.

I set the parking brake and replaced the fuse and the self test still didn't work. I know it's the cruise that's blowing it because I tried to set the cruise while driving without the trailer. The cruise light flashed on and then immediately went out as the fuse blew. The cruise does not work.....Neal....
OK, the cruise flashes once after switching on. Then when I follow the sequence you outlined, it flashes once after 'on' then does not flash after any of the rest (resume, coast, set/accel). It is not flashing five times after entering diagnostic mode. Bad on right side? Could that cause a short blown fuse?
It does sound like a defective switch, but I don't see how it's blowing the trailer fuse. I'd go ahead and get the recall done then you can start looking at what else you need to chase down. There could be a problem with the buttons themselves or it could be a short in the steering column too.
I'd also check the wires near your trailer plug and see if you can find the short that's causing your fuse to blow and your trailer lights not to work.

I am having problem with my cruise control also. The recall was done on my 03 excursion v10 about 3000miles ago. currently just little over 90,000miles.
I followed the self test and I got 3 flashes after the SET ACCEL.
3 Flashes - Deactivator switch is open or circuit defective.
What would be the next step I should check?
thanks
Thanks Chris. I found the problem. For some reason the plug was not connected on the lower side of the brake fluid reservoir. Not sure if the Ford tech just forgot to plug it back in after the recall or what not. But it works again.
thanks for the help.
