4wd clattering but not engaging

I have a 1984 explorer with 4-wheel drive. When I turn on the 4wd ( by the button on the dash) I hear clattering like the 4wd is trying to engage. When I get into the mud I see that the 4wd is not working but still clattering. I have a general manual that seems to indicate the 4wd is engaged at the tranfer case. I have a jeep and I know how the hubs on it work and I'm wondering if the explorer has something similar but it is not engaging. Is anyone familiar with this problem or might know what it might be? Thanks for any help.

I have never worked on those push button types, but chattering can not be good! They work off of a coil and if its burnt out or weak then it is not engaging fully and you are tearing stuff up. I refuse to buy anything with push button 4wd. I don't even like auto-locking hubs. I know that when I get out and turn them they are engaged.
