I broke my truck today, need some help finding the problem
So I was driving to work and about 20yds outside of my apartment my engine began to drive really rough (but went back to normal when I let off the clutch) then I lost all hp and was slowed to a crawl. I decided to turn around and come back home when it died on me after throwing out a big white (possibly blue, I only caught the tail-end of the smoke cloud in my mir.) cloud of smoke. Any ideas?
I looked under the hood and this cap was blown off and the fluid level is very high....about 1in from the cap. It also shot the liquid all over the side of my engine when it blew.....do yall have any ideas?
I sure hope yall can help me out.. I need my truck for work/school
That is the power steering fluid reservoir. That shouldn't do any of the symptoms you described. Except for maybe the smoke on the exhaust manifold.
Do you have the factory Flywheel in the truck?
My guess is that the DMF went bad and the vibration caused the cap to come off a bit and dump fluid on the exhaust manifold. Have you tried to crank it again? Does it vibrate in neutral with the clutch out or clutch in?
It probably felt like it lost power because of the vibration. More info needed.

The steeringfluid is from steering it without the motor running ...The stalling is another matter...Need to do some testing ,, Oil level , fuel level in the filter ,Check the wiring to the valve covers for loose or burned connections ,,,If you are running a chip ,, unplug it (make sure the key is off )....

Yep, Rick (Action4478) nailed the power steering thing. When you turn the steering wheel with the engine off it will pukes fluid out of the top.
The engine stalling is another issue. Does the tach move when you are cranking it?
If not, my guess is CPS...but you need to answer Ricks questions above.
Alrighty I am about to go out and run through and check out all of the things yall mentioned.
But I can answer some Q's now
It was not cold outside when it happend, I think it is maybe 86ish here in east tx.
I was not driving it hard, I had started the truck maybe 3 mins before it happened. I let it idle for about 2mins before leaving my apartment was going up a hill in 1st gear w/med to low rpms becuase the engine was warming up still and it went out.
What is the HPO reservoir?
About the flywheel I have no idea if it is the factory flywheel, when I bought the truck the last owner didnt say either way but I can email him and check.
Good news yall...
I went out and checked if the tach moved while cranking. While cranking the tach moved, so just for giggles I kept cranking and it had a little trouble starting but it eventually started and ran fine (and starts fine now). It was starting like it used to before I changed out my battery cables (both + and -). This is pretty strange yall....
Does it sound like I have some wiring issues? Maybe something not grounded correctly?
So the problem is still there...
I drove it all yesterday (After it died) and it ran very well, plenty of power, great idle etc
Well it started running rough again today, I limped it off the road and shut off the engine for a few mins. When I restarted it ran fine.
Could I have gotten my hands on some bad fuel? I bought the fuel about 2 weeks ago, it has been in my transfer tank with some diesel kleen to help stabilize the fuel.
Now the way that you descibe it it almost sounds like a CPS or VCWH. I would bet more on the cps though. Very similar conditions. YOu have a code reader? Access to a buddy that has a edge tuner to pull codes?

Try what everyone else says first... then if everything else fails find a buddy's PSD and swap out the IDM. My truck had the exact same symptoms when the IDM was dying. the chances of that happening are very slim, and it is an expensive part to replace. Usually there good or dead, no intermediate. I lucked out I guess.
