Exclamation new to bronco world an need a little help.....

i just bought a 89 bronco with a 302 in it door tag says tranny type "t" what does this mean? the tranny will only go in reverse no foward action at all.

also does anyone one know what the stock gear are in it 4.10 or 3.55

i was told the gears were changed cause the rear end went out and am worried if i rebuild the tranny and try to use 4x4 it will mess something up in tranny or transfere case....

does any of this make sense or am i just lost? please help

I'm not sure what the "T" is. If it's a automatic, its probubly an AOD. (automatic over drive) They changed to E40D (electrictronic over drive) right around your year, so it could be that. You can tell the differnce by the driveshafts. If the rear shaft is obviously longer than the front, its the AOD. (On the E40D they are about the same length)

The gears are 3.55 stock. It will cause trouble if they only changed the rear diff gears and you run it in 4x4 on hard surface.

Wayne - your year truck came with two transmission possabilities:
1) The C6 Transmission
2) or AOD/AOT

Most likely it was the AOD/AOT. To be sure check the shape of the transimssion pan. If it is more square looing than it is the AOD/AOT. If it has more turns then it is the c6 (the rear edge is "S" shaped).

The stock gear is likley the 3.55 set. If they blew the gears out of the rear end it was most likley due to a large set of tires (33s, 35s or larger). They may have put in 4.10 to compensate for the larger tires. If they went with different gearing then they should have also matched gearing in the front end as well (both front and rear should be 4.10). If they did not then it could mess up your gears.

If they were smart then they matched gears (front and rear) and everything should be Kosher. Your transmission and Transfercase should hold up just fine. Although there are things you can due to extend the life of your transmission...hopefully someone can chime in on that...I have a manual so my transmission is bullet/bomb proof!
