Badd GT is starting off with a positive reputation.
changes in 2008 V10 F550 vs 2005 V10 F550

what are some of the changes if any are know right now.

my dad says the new V10 is getting about 3mpg worse than the old one.
i figure some of this is due to things being loosened up a bit on the old one.

also looking for things to get better mpg out of it.
truck will see about 60,000 miles a year................all in town, heavy heavy hauling.
1100 gallons of liquid, heavy steel bed & heavy duty lift gate.
occasionally pulling 40ft trailer with 5,000lbs of payload.
and to top it off bed/tank/load is anywhere from 2-4ft taller than cab creating allow of wind resistance.
thanks

I hadn't read anything different from the design going in to the 08 model, but heck that don't mean it ain't so. Are you sure he wasn't thinking of the new 08 diesel.....it gets lower MPGs than the 6.0 diesel it replaced by about your stated difference.

Reading on in your post and what you are looking to do with the truck...heavy load, mostly intown driving, and looking to increase MPG, just doesn't compute. You most likely won't see much over 6 maybe 7 MPG if you are lucky and careful. Plus with putting 60K a year on the truck, it would depend on how many years you plan on keeping the truck, but you may be one of the few who could be better off (long term)going with a diesel option. I say this taking into consideration the work you are going to be doing, plus the resale of a F-450 and up size truck sucks when compared to the F-250/F350 trucks. Maybe you should just bite the bullet upfront and go F-650 with a CAT or CUMMINS diesel option. Just a thought, plus if you are buying for work purpose you are going to write the truck off your taxes anyway.

Air intake and exhaust are different on the '08s. I suspect it has a diffent tune, but I am unable to find any information on that anywhere.

F450/550 trucks for '08 can't be had with a ratio any higher 4.88. I think you could get 4.30s in prior years, but I'm not sure on that. Like Krewat says, check the gearing.

Only gear choices for V10 F-450/F-550s : 4.88:1s(standard), or 5.38:1 (optional).

I belive the V-10 is the same (08) other than intake/exh changes and tune. Only other Changes I have read about were:
Talk of it being discontinued or a EGR valve being added, both were B.S.

the extra cost of the diesel motor, extra cost of diesel over gas, cost of oil changes, having to plug them in during winter months, cost of replacing injectors all have him just wanting to stay with V-10's.

the business insurance really nails you once you pass the 550/5500 series trucks.

i think my dad said the F550 cab & chassis does not have the extra resonator or whatever in the exhaust.

just wondering if the Y-pipe mod will net any worthwhile gain, he dont want to go the tuner route for fear of warranty issues.

are these trucks set up to use E85?

i think the truck averages 6.6mpg with about 10,000 miles on the odometer now.

i just roughly figured it but if we put 55,000miles a year on them X 4yrs and the V-10 gets 6.6mpg & the diesel gets 9.6mpg.
i dont know the price of the new diesel but i figured $5700 plus oil changing every 10,000miles should cost about $300 per year more than the V-10 brings total extra up to about $7000.
i should save about $23,000 over 4yrs in fuel minus $7000 extra cost of diesel puts it about $4000 per year cheaper to operate.......... if i get at least 9.6mpg, diesel stays around $4.50 & i keep running 55,000miles a year.

i am not sure what the diesel's get mpg.
but i am thinking that 1mpg increase = huge saving for us seeing that we have 2 trucks now & adding 3rd truck within 6-8months & i will be getting my own in about a year.

my best bet is probably keep my rigging close to cab height & maybe invest in an all aluminum bed setup to keep weight down ( this will also keep the DOT off my butt when hauling heavy loads).

No E-85
No Y pipe mod needed on 05 and up

anything to be had from a different muffler?...................this thing is really quiet.........which usually means really restrictive.

Or really big. Large exhausts/mufflers can still flow and quiet things down.

What is different with the intakes between the years??

08' 3V engines got a redesigned spark plug also. A free flowing muffler will help, the stock muffler is restrictive. You could look at a Flowmaster FM70, Flowmaster FM50 Big Block or a large bodied magnaflow. The FM50 Big Block would be the quietest of the flowmasters but still be louder than stock.

Only Engines built after 2/1/08. Most 08's will be old style and all 2009's will be new style
