Oil smoke on cold startup

My 200 F150 extended cab 4X4 with 4.6l engine & 150,000km puts out a cloud of blue smoke the first time it is started up. After that, it doesn't seem to do it on restart. It consumed a couple of litres of oil during a moose hunting trip last fall. It doesn't noticeably emit oil smoke once it is running. It seems like the oil pools somewhere and leaks into the cylinders and burns off when started cold. Is this a common problem? Valve seals???

Probably just valve guides. If it's not using a god awful amount I wouldn't worry about it. My 99 sat for 2 years with out being started when I was over sea's. When I got back one of mine had gone bad. So my truck would puff alittle with 18k on it. 170k now and still runnin strong. Plug fouls out every 20-30k now. Not a big deal in my book. It's just a little oil that puddles when the truck sits for long periods, then burns off when you start it.

Yeah, I agree valve guides, mine does it now and then on start up, I have a 98 with145,000 miles...runs like new otherwise. Has always used a quart between changes (3000 mile intervals), I have no leaks, just uses a little. I would not worry about it one bit. Just keep up with fesh oil and filter changes as you feel needed.
