AOD again

I have an 84 F250 351
I assume I have C-6 as it is not overdrive, I like the C-6 its tough as nails had a couple on my 70 fords when I had them. Thinking of switching to an AOD because I'm a carpenter and jobs are a long way away bout 1/2 the time. I always have about 1000#s of tools in truck, I pull a big saw or carry a heavy diesel tank maybe once every 2-3 months. Do you think an AOD is a good solution for me for mileage? what years? any computer problems? I turn 2600 rpm at 65 and 3000 rpm at 70-75. I think I have a dana 60 rearend because it has a ridge in the middle and a fill hole, don't know gear ratio.

The AOD isn't cheap in a beefed, upgraded form. Think $2000 plus the install:

Check this site, they sell parts for upgrades. '88-93 cores are mentioned, as it took Ford a looonnnnggg time to figure this trans out, if, in fact, they ever did.

Gear Vendors under/overdrive transmissions the most awarded auxiliary transmissions.

At $4/gallon, you have to save 750 or so gallons of gas to make sense of this at all. With approx 20% OD, maybe you'll save 10%.

55 mph starts to look good.....

Time or money, maybe both. No free lunch methinks....


BTW, assume you have a 351W, the M is a diff bell and the AOD won't fit. Can't keep track of the multiple
35x engine years....

OK,
was walking around the junk yard today, minding my own business and saw a funny decal on an F150. it was a Gear Vendors underdrive/overdrive sign. i looks underneath and sure enough there it is, looks intact, i check the floorboard and the step switch is there all wiring seems intact.
SO my question is the donor truck is an 88 trans code "K" like my 84
(C-6), is there a difference in the transmissions?
the tail shaft looks a little different is it? can i swap it with my tailshaft if it is?

And i also found a 85 F250 diesel with a C-6 and a borg warner overdrive, would this be a better fit?

I can't imagine the one you found can't be made to work with your trans. The basic unit is the same, just the way it hooks up, methinks....

As for the BW unit, have not heard of such a beast, perhaps this was adapted from '60s-'70s electric ODs found on the tails of 3 on the tree transmissions?

looks like the tail shaft is part of the overdrive, thats why it looked funny. gonna go get it this weekend
