The old Brown Eros is still with me! White Gerry going

I want to share my NEW enthusiasm for the old Aero.
I recently bought a -95 German made passenger van as an experiment to see if would suit our needs any better than the good old Eros.
It didn't.
Well, maybe I'm just stuck with the habit of driving Aeros for 5 years, but there are some points that can be measured:
Power; Aero has more
Steering; Aero has better power steering, (noisy though)
Noise; Aero is quieter all over and far better at speed
AC; Aero has it, the other one is hot in the sun
Cruise Control; Aero has it, the other don't
Auto trans; Aero has it, the other don't
Seats; Armrests on the Aero
Handling; Like the Aero better
Brakes; close race
Parts and repairs; Fairly low prices, local nice garage
Fuel economy; weeell, Aero costs me 25% more per mile, but I'll save it all on repairs.

So, White Gerry has to go. It has a history of 260.000km and repairs worth $20.000! And still has a bad power steering pump, electric fan problem and a coolant leak.
Aero has 320.000km and no issues, (at the moment). Fingers crossed!

NorthernStar,
see one of our Aeros made it to the far north Bergen Norway.
how does the Aero heater handle the winters up there? i find that cold air finds its way in the driver's door going down the road, burr.
does your's have dual heaters front and rear?

which German van, the VW?
$20.000 to repair, hope that's in NOK and not US $$, still high in US $4,000 approx.

what oil do you run in the Aero 3L in your cold winters for good starting?
block heater?

Hi 96-4wdr
Our climate here at the southern/western Atlantic shore isn't as harsh as you might think. There are a couple of months where the mercury might -or might not- hit the blues.
And, good for me; my doors don't leak air onto me on the cold days. I have only one, but a VERY good new heater. Sure made a difference to the old one, almost glad it broke!

My motor oil is fully synthetic 5-40 or so. I try to change it every 5000 km or so. But changing filter matters more, I believe.
It runs very fine, new plugs and all this year.

About the White Gerry; yes it is a VW. And the repair history of money spent is really reading 100.000 Norwegian Kroner. At today's currency rate this converts to -yes- $20.000,-
That's not a good sign to me.

brother in law had a new VW van in the mid '90s with the 5 cyl water cooled engine front engine, about the same time that i got the 96 Aero.
rig spent more time in shop being repaired than on the road, he got rid of it after 3 years of headaches.

ran like a Swiss watch when all was working well and was larger inside and had more comfortable seating in back than the Aero but unreliable.
left them stranded several times on vacation and road trips.

NorthernStar!

whed did you get aerostar with speedo in km. I've never seen made for Europe aerostar. All sold in Russia aeros were made in the USA. Speedos were Canadian (in km). I got mine in San Fernando, CA (speedo in miles).

Well, comparing Aero with VW tarnspoter. VW is made like commercial van, so it islike a breadbox on 4 wheels. Aerostar was designed as family van.

Aerostar is RWD, VW is FWD, so WV does not need so tought substructure like aero. Aerostar chassis is made like chassis of light truck but welded in body frame is more tought then aerostar needs, but that's why aerostar safety is much better then VW. I saw so many lethal accidents with VW vans..... especially cargo. Palyload kills drivers.

My aerostar had the same stock paint like yourth on gallery photo. Was it sold? it seems to me it was made in the USA.

From the other side it looks like one guy's from Switzerlad aerostar (I see made in Germany VW headlamps that fit aerostar). And licensie plate does not look like Norvegian.

Olav's Norwegian license plates - Number plates of Norway

loved those two tone silver sided Aeros. made them look longer and lower, not a vertical box on tiny skinny wheels. none avail in 96 when i got mine

shines like the day she was new off the Ford Detroit line
what year Ford and proof?

I saw a lot of 4wd Aeros in Fairbanks. They had the full compliment of extreme cold modifications. Their only regular failures are the rubber bellows on the CV shafts, as all vehicles with CV shafts will crack the rubber when the temps get beloew -40. Bergen is a few degrees south of Fairbanks, and near the coast, so it may be less harsh.
