I'm replacing the axle shaft u-joints on a front TTB axle from a '82 Bronco. I'm having trouble pulling the stub shaft out of the diff to change the u-joint. It's the earlier style that has the plate that is supposed to hold it in. Well, I removed that plate, but can't seem to get the axle shaft to budge. There's no snap rings or c-clips that i can see holding it in the diff. Any ideas on how to get this out? Or would I be better off trying to change the u-joint while its still attached?
Here's some pics of the third member and the plate by the stub shaft. I still can't find the C-clip or anything else holding it in?
My Haynes manual lists two different types of retaining, internal and early style external. It said that the early style should just slip out after the plate is removed or that a slide hammer may be needed. I'm not that familiar with using a slide hammer but what would you attach it to? It doesn't seem like theres much to grab on to?
Push the stub shaft into the carrier. You should see teh end of the shaft come in towards the crossshaft. If there is a C-clip, you will see it then. The tip of the axleshaft some come up out of the side gewar. There is a recess in the side gear that the c-clip can reside in. If a slide hammer is needed, it'd be easier to tap on the yoke with a regular hammer. Push in first, make sure there is no C-Clip.
