do i need to provide a break-in period for my trans? the builder says no, he says to take it straight out and use the crap outta it to see if it will last off the bat.
he said it burned out starting with reverse. he asked if i had been backing up huge loads long distances, but i havent. what would cause that?

I just had mine rebuilt. He told me to take a 1000 mile break in period then to bring it back up so they can make sure everything broke in good and stuff. The guy that did my uncles told him to go out and run it hard to work the tranny good, just dont pull for 500 miles. So not totally sure but im following the 1000 mile break in that the guy told me. That 1000 miles includes no "heavy" pulling.

Backing up huge loads is tough on them because you don't get any wind through the cooler, and it's often slipping and gets hot fast if you're pushing hard and letting up to correct steering, etc. If it was mine, I'd do a fluid and filter change in the first 1000 miles just for peace of mind.
reputation, ect. talk to them. see if they seem to know what they are talking about. see if any large businesses around ur area use them. a good build will be anywhere from $1600 up. be sure to get heavy clutch packs, a good solid flat-back convertor, and all that good stuff.

That's part I'm not familiar with. What do you mean by "Flat back" for the TC? Did your tranny shop order a rebuild kit for you? Did you provide a rebuild kit to the tranny shop?
I want to get a TC and tranny rebuild so I don't have to worry when towing my travel trailer and hauling stuff (most likely less than 10K) for the non-truck owners I know.
What "good stuff" is everyone refering to? Where do I get it? How can I make sure the "good stuff" I want installed is the same "good stuff" the tranny shop installs?

there are many upgrades you can do to your e4od to make it stronger. the obvious things are stornger clutches and steels, and a good torque converter. but there are other upgrades as well, such as swapping the cheap 4 pinion aluminum planetaries out for the 6 pinion steel units, a good valve body/shift kit, programming, changing the drum and swapping fluid holes to get more pressure to the clutches.
i have never checked his prices but at a quick glance Racerx automotive sells most, if not all, of the upgraded parts you would want to get if you were doing a total teardown and overhaul. that would be a convienient way to get it all in one place
