Well this is some $#!t and news to me. Looking at a set of Autolite 45's right now. Boxes have "Made in China designed in the USA" plastered all over the box. Nothing on the plugs themselves tho. My Cougars 390 came with " ND" Nippondenso ma20pr-U's which I've NEVER heard of before. But made in Japan. Appear to be the completely wrong plug for the car but very good quality compared to the Autolites which look pretty shabby now I've taken a closer look. I need to pay closer attention I guess. Honeywell Ind is very close to me here in CT. Been there long as I can remember too. Sad to see. I'm on the hunt for some vintage 32's anyway and some oem points and condensor sets also. Not far from me and apparently worth the trip. Wow!
On a side note I've been running printing presses from Japan for some 25 years. Quality has been excellent over the several brands of machines I've run. But for $300k up to $2 million bucks per press you'd hope so!! LOL
Damn, no edit. We also have the almost same thread about Autolite plugs going on in General Discussion that went on months ago on the Taurus Forum. I got lost in the time/space continuum...

Agreed, i compared the the usa made autolite's to the the china mada autolite's, most of the ground straps don't even completely extend over the electrode, some barely reach half way, the ceramic insulators surrounding the core are ill fitting and chipped right outta the box, some of the cores protrude further beyond the insulator then others, definitely an inferior product. thank you Honeywell.
This is a great thread. Maybe I'll have a good look at the plugs in the ole girl this weekend for a little fun. Autolites purchased about 1.5 years ago and it's had an irregular miss since I can recall now. Not driving me crazy just enough to notice it.
The best plug change you can do for the FE engines is to stop using the spec'd plug and go to the extended tip plug the car engines use. Improves mileage and plug life.
This brings up a question I had about the car plug. I tried to get the longer reach at O'Reilleys, and they told me that the # was the same as the one for my truck. Do you happen to know the # for the car plug?
The China thing is getting ridiculous. I saw some "Genuine Texas Outdoor Furniture" at my sis-in-law this past weekend and on the box on the bottom it said "Made in China" Yeeeeeeeeeeehaw!
I can give you Champion numbers, truck RF10C while the extended tip car plug was RF9YC or RF11YC. The R is resistor, F is the size of the plug, Y denotes the extended tip, the C is for copper, the 9, 10 and 11 are heat rang with the higher the number the hotter the heat range. A lot of dealer and distributors even, don't carry a full line anymore and cheat by telling you the wrong plugs to keep inventory down.

Very help input there Bear. Thanks you. Going to try these but one ?. If the truck is a 10 and the car only comes in 9 or 11 heat ranges... what I would assume would be best for the truck is an 11 ?

Go with the 9 as a colder plug, as long as they don't foul (never had it happen) is better than a hotter plug.

Small update. We went to the local Wal-Mart today. And while getting some oil for the truck we checked out the autolite plugs they had on the shelve. Each box was labeled "Made in USA".
The El'Cheapo Autolites might indeed be made in China, but the ones at our local store? Listed as made in the US.

Ironic you should mention that, i went to Pamida (our local version of Wal-mart) yesterday, with the idea in mind that these department stores probably sell far fewer spark plugs then the Napa's and O'reilly's of the world and may have some old stock on hand, and i'll be darned if the autolite's didn't say "Made in USA" right on the box, they only had four sets of 45's so needless to say i snagged em up for future use.
Back in the late 60's the auto parts store where, I shopped for parts+, stopped stocking Motorcraft plugs, I ask the counter man why!! He said since Motorcraft was part of the Ford corp.and raised there prices so high to retailers that there was no way they could make any profit so they stopped stocking them. Then Autolite jump in with the same colored looking box was offered as a replacement and. It was a power pull back in the days of the mussel cars days. For sales.. A few yrs ago when to Napa they ordered some colder Motocraft plugs from ford dealer Autolite and Motorcraft not the same. My 2cents

Owner for 3O great yrs.
30 years ago I used Autolites too, but stopped when the mart stores started to carry them in the infamous "blister packs". I use to believe Autolites were best in Fords, AC's in Chevys and saved Champions for Chrysler products -not no more. In the last 20 years I haven't seen a plug that is better than a ND or NGK...
