7.3 idi max rpm

I been working on this retired uhaul with a 7.3 idi and a c6. At 60 mph its at about 3000 rpm. How long can these engines hold 3000 rpm or better. The truck has an overspeed buzzer and light but im not sure how to hook it back up. The temp creeps up on it too at 60 mph. at one point the temp got up high enough to turn the engine light on. But I think that was related to another problem. A cab ground wire was left off when i put the engine back in and it was causing all the gauges to go up when i turned the blower motor or the lights on. When the engine light came on, it was at night with the ac on. but anyway whats the recommended max rpm on these. The pump has it set at 3700. If im doing 3700 rpm, i can get to 75 but i dont want to blow it up.

It'd be just like any other engine, as long as it has good oil pressure and doesnt over heat u'll be ok...but u can watch the fuel guage plummet LOL.

3700 is too high
it should be limited to around 3400 max

As a general rule for diesel engines if the governer is at its factory setting then there should be no problem with running it there. Of couse it will build more heat and yur cooling system may not handle it so if it starts to over heat let off it.

3700 sounds high for these engines. mines at 3400 I belive. It'll do 118mph ish for extended time no problem except the fule gauge plumiting.

I know someone who has his turned up to over 4000, but you can run it at 3700 all day long, it should never overheat unless something is wrong. Mine never overheated at 3700 pulling a heavy load, these engines have GREAT cooling systems, if they overheat something is wrong. Mine with a C6 GearVendor Overdrive and 4.11 gears tops out somewhere around 0 mph, since the speedo only goes to 85, Ive turned the speedo all the way back to 0.

WOW!

My speedo was only pointing at at 2 on my gear selector doing 118ish, calculated for me by Dave S. useing RPM the overdrive ratio of the E4OD my rear end ratio and my tire size.

C6 and Gear Vendors overdrive on 33" rubber with 4.10 gears at 3700 RPM should be 113.6 MPH.

overheating is not the issue with high rpm
on a diesel it is the reciprocating mass
they will perform just fine until they toss a rod from high rpm

If you look at the tach, it turns yellow at 3400 RPM.
It turns red at 3800 RPM.

I have seen IP reman spec sheets that give a printout of all the IP parameters after the rebuild.
I think the highest RPM I remember seeing was 3700 which was the point the govenor shut the fuel off at so it would not go any faster.

As for modified IP's, I know of a few that will go several hundred RPM higher.

Dps sets theres at 3800rpm I wouldn't have a problem running that with a new motor but I would not trust 14 year old rod bolt or rods for that mater not to streach.

Any one know what RPM zero quench is on these motors? Although i think they would probly blow apart from the massive ricipricating mass first.
