Gas Fill location

I have a box for the 78 that I am restoring I did not buy it the previous owner did it is in good shape, no rust, no dents. But the truck it came off of must have only had the rear tank and mine only has the mid ship tank. My question is could someone give me the dimensions for where it should be located. moving it is no problem for me I have done alot of fabrication in my day I just need to know where to put it.

the rear tank should be in between the frame rails in the very back of the truck.

huh, think he might have been asking where to move the fill opening to.....but wouldn't you have the old box for that...? probably want to leave the rear opening in place and get one to graft from a junker....and/or add the rear tank- the truck should have come with it standard

Usually the midship tank is an auxillary and not the main tank. Your 78 should have had a rear tank as a main, unless someone took it out. Do you have an in-cab tank as well.

I don't have the old box to measure off of. This truck belonged to a friend of mine that pasted away he was in the middle of restoring it so what I got is alot of parts. All I need to know is where to locate the filler opening. The truck originally had both midship and rear tanks I don't plan to put the rear tank back in ever don't plan to drive it enough or very far from home to need two tanks.

You will spend less money and have less aggravation w/ just installing a rear fuel tank than trying to 'graft' in a fwd. fuel door. You can cheat and use the saddle tank filler neck which was inside the wheel well and just leave the rear fuel door as a 'dummy', just an option.

Other note: the fwd. fuel door will be parallel w/ rear fuel door, and if your bed has the raised spot in the lower bottom edge of d/s bed, fwd. of wheel well you can get an idea where the access door will need to go.

This is just my opinion, but...


These trucks didn't come with just a front tank.

All of these trucks, (bar highboys, chassis cabs) came with a rear tank as standard.

I would put in the Rear tank, because it is the main tank on these trucks, and remove the auxilery or saddle tank, if you don't want two tanks.

This would eliminate all need for any fabrication work, and make finding replacement parts down the road, if needed, easier and not impossible to find.

I have a couple of trucks w/ 2 tanks, when the money is there and it ain't that often I fill 'em up before it goes up and it is quite some time before the next fill up, it actually seems like they never go empty, just keep toppin' them off, guess I actually need to start them sometime...lol.

This is what I do. I never let either tank get below half a tank anymore. This way I have the gas in an emergency, the tanks don't rust, and I don't get a big whopping $160 bill each time I fill up.

I also agree with putting in a rear tank. They are not that expensive and will save alot of work for ya.

I'd say put in the rear tank. You can find all parts for the rear tank; nary for the front.
