Got an e4od ? (Lookin at a 1996 f150)

I went to look at this truck last night, its a 96 f150 4x4,160k, XL, 300-6, e4od, reg cab longbed. Anyway, the lady only wants 500 bucks for it, it runs flawless, the interior is spotless, and the body is in good shape, no dents, usually ford rust.

Anyway, she said the tranny was shifting real hard, she had her neighbor replace the filter on the tranny, thinkin it was bad. When he dropped the pan, a couple lil balls fell out. (thats what she told me) anyway... what do you gurus think is wrong with it? Perhaps i could swap valve bodiies? I have an good e4od out of a 92 sitting in the garage, along with a mound of other ford parts, i was thinkin about swappin out the trannys, maybee makin a lil money.

Thoughts???

it is missing its balls.

buy it for 500 and then figure out what is wrong.

probably the valve body, the neighbor might not have known what he was doing and messed it up.

it is a steal for a 4x4.

i will buy it if you do not.

Virto is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
The 96 tranny has better components than the 92.

You'd be best off either swapping in your good tranny or rebuilding the 96 with the correct parts. Your 92 tranny can be built to later spec using the revised parts, so yes, they will interchange...but the later the E4OD parts you use, the better off you will be.

4x4 for 500 bucks? Around me it would have no engine in it. Snatch that one up.

Actually.. I bet there's nothing wrong with the tranny. If the pan has never been off it there will be at least 1 curious looking round piece in there, this is a plug installed in the oil fill tube on the assembly line to prevent dirt getting in the tranny, this plug gets pushed into the pan when fluid is added for the first time.

Hard shifting with the E4OD equipped trucks often indicates a bad VSS, it's common to see an eratic or dead speedo at the same time. The computer defaults to a firm shift pattern when is looses the VSS signal as a protective feature for the tranny.

i was going to mention the plastic piece but the guy said small balls so i thought maybe something else.

it may be the vss but this truck sounds well worth it to me.

Thanks, that info is really helpful...

Ill probably be pickin in up soon, even tho this will make truck number 4 at one time, i think its worth it, except for the nasty baby blue/purple the color is, its probablly still a deal.

Im half temped to turn it into a daily driver, with gas being 4 bucks a gallon, insurance would be cheaper, and id like to keep the miles off of my lightning.

Worse case scenario, what would a e4od rebuild cost, if i pulled it myself and took it in? What would a TQ cost roughly? i know the e4od arnt cheap

Oh, and what do the stock 300-6's get for mpg's, around 18 or so?

Thanks again
Chris
