Hi everyone,Last month when I was in Arizona I was talking to a guy who was selling a fuel injected 460. He said he built it up himself and it produces 650 HP. Now what got me is he said it redlines at 12,000 RPM! Is this possible with a big block engine of this size? Thanks
he can set the redline on his tach to any number he wants, the thing will probably self destruct way before then anyways. even with going to the lightest rods, pistons, valves, springs, pushrods, etc, i doubt if the motor would live past 8000 rpm with all those mods. for 12k he would have to have some very special parts and very large heads for that motor to even reach that peak.
without seeing what he did as far as modifications, even the 650hp claim i would take with a grain of salt. very possible to get 650 from a 460 even with stock heads, but since this guy is obviously exagarrating about his redline, i would seriously doubt his hp claim without a dyno sheet to prove it.
there are lots of "car guys" out there who make outrageous claims until you ask them to back up those claims with real proof, then all of a sudden they change their story pretty quickly. like the guys with stock 302 that they put an intake and carb and maybe a cam and all of a sudden they are 400hp screamers.
next time just smile at him and nod your head. better yet ask him for the keys so you can take it to this magical redline for yourself.
Hhhm, I google searched "piston speed calculator" and "piston speed limits". A 460 with the stock 3.85 stroke at 12000 rpm has piston speed of 7700 feet per minute. That would be in the territory of drag racing mountain motors and F1 cars. The F1 cars run really short strokes and light components, and last 300 miles. The mountain motors, the details of which I am only superficially aquainted with, seem to have an engine life listed in seconds....
Stock components are usually good for 3500 fpm. Exotics like BMW M3s and Ferraris hold under 5000, most under 4500.
Most pulling truck motors (460's) run right around 7 to 8 grand. That's all roller setup, fully balenced, heads done to the max (around here were limited to cast heads, so usually SCJ's) running tunnel rams or victors w/ single carbs. Usually making about 800HP with 13ish:1 compression. The motors hit that for a whole give or take 15 seconds each run and are usually rebuilt each season. I know some 454's will get up to 9 grand, but a 460 ford won't hold together much over 8000 rpms. If he's "able" to turn those kinda rpms and only making 650 HP he didn't build that engine very well. I'm calling BS on that one.

Should have asked him if he was a MaaAaaaagic leprechaun! and if I stuff you in my gas tank will I got a 400hp boost and 90mpg because I might believe that before I'll believe this thing will hit 12grand...
Not to get off topic but I was wondering.
If I where to take the 460 out of my truck slap it on a stand and just floored it would it just rav until it denigrated? or does every engine reach a point to where it just can't spin its self any more? Kinda off the question

2 strokes have a rev limit and reach it real quick, my factory stock Mercury 1500XS rated at 155hp at 6300 would rev to about 7400 max and there was no rev limiter in the ignition box. 4 stroke motors have more creep in them, but yes there is a max they will rev too, if they don't detonate first.

It redlines at 12,000? My 300 could redline at 8 grand, just depends where I wanna set the tach, lol, doesn't mean it'll ever get there though. Maybe I'll spend some more money and get a tach that goes to 12,000, then my engine can run 12 grand to, right?

highest I know with a stock crank was Terry Brumbager (spl?) offset ground 429 crank to 385 stroke, hit 10,500 a couple times before it snapped the crank in half and that WAS a well built engine. 8000rpm on a decent build is possible and will survive fairly well even in a stock block but with aftermarket rods and pistons (stock rods will let go before that and stock pistons will never live past 7k for more then a couple seconds) go with lightened pistons, billet rods and at a min a good forged crank (not a stock forged 429 but a GOOD forged unit) balanced properly and with the right cam and heads and they will live in the 9500rpm range ok but will need frequent maintenance. My 528 frequently saw 8000 but I also refreshed it every year, and it only ran like that about 4 seconds at a time.
