Dana 60?

I have a 1966 F-100 2wd with a dana 60 rear end. I don't know what kind of shape the rear end is in or the gear ratio, but how hard or expensive is it to rebuild one? Are the dana 60 capable of 400 horsepower?

Are you sure it's not the Dana 44? Post a pic. Dana 60 is pretty stout unit. Semi-floating version used in Chryslers Hemi Cars of the late 60's.

I agree, the 60 has 8 lugs and would have been installed in F250s & 350s. Most half tons have 9 inch rears with a few 44s scattered in.

Someone could have swapped on in.

garbz2 is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
Some 60.2s are equipped with five lugs.

There out there.

What is your axle code on your warranty tag?

Dana 60 is one of the strongest, most capable rear diffs ever used in a production vehicle. 400 hp is nothing for a Dana 60.

Spicer-Dana 60.2's were optional on 1961/67 F100's.

5 lug 5.50" bolt pattern. With or without Limited Slip was available.

I've decoded at least 15 of these Spicer-Dana 60.2 axle codes here on FTE.

First digit of AXLE code is a letter, it's a Limited Slip.

First digit of AXLE code is a number: non Limited Slip.

I've got a 60 on my 64 f250, how hard might it be to change the gear ratio, and the axles (I assume thats what I'll need to change from an 8 to a 5 lug pattern)?

The F250 60's were full-floating designs whereas the F-100 60's were of a semi-floating design. You're best off to stay with the 8-lug.

I was thinking about swapping the full rear end butt stick with a 60. I'm not using the truck to haul or tow anything, just as a first restoration project.

Probably much easier to just swap in a 9-inch (easier to find and plenty strong) if you want a five lug. Are you going to do the front also?

I had planned on it. Looks simple enough to do, its just a two wheel drive so should just be a matter of hubs, right?

No, You will need to swap the complete rear end, including springs if you want a softer ride.

For the rear, but the front should just be the hubs. Right
