Downsizing? Anyone Else?

Just downsized from 2005 F250SD CC 4X4 V10 to 2008 F150 CC 4X4 5.4, hope it tows the 7000 lbs boat? Will wait for new Superduty in 2010, and see how the gas market plays out.

I have to ask why? If it's for gas reasons, it really doesn't make sense to go from an 05 to an 08, just to go to a 2010.

I just downsized from a 2004 F250 SC 6.0PSD 4x4 to a 2004 F150 SC 5.4 4x4. I miss the torque of the SCT tuned 6.0, no doubt about that. But, for the kind of driving I do and what little towing I do, I never needed the diesel anyways. It was fun for the last year though. Before I got the diesel I had a 2004 Nissan Titan and I was pleased with the way it towed. I had pulled 8000lbs with that one and it did pretty well. Hopefully the F150 can tow some heavy loads on occasion without to much complaining.

Why you ask, I just increased my work commute by an additional 20 miles, V10 with a 410 rear end wasn't doing me any justice on freeway. I tow the boat seasonal. The sense is 2 additional years of V10 gas or 5.4 gas, til the economy and the new Superduty emrge and stabilize.

don't be surprised if you didn't gain a whole lot in gas economy. most likely woulda been better off buying a daily driver IMO and keeping the V10. You prolly paid more in dealer fees than you're gonna save on gas over the next 5 years

The 5.4L will tow a 7000 lb boat, no problem. I just got back from a trip to Moab UT about a week ago. Towed the Jeep on a trailer behind the F150. 1100 miles each way, from Snohomish, WA. Trailer/Jeep combo weighs in at about 6500 lbs, and we had another 300 lbs of cargo in the truck.

Going down, I was in a group with 2 F350's also towing Jeeps. We were running 70-75 mph, slowing up to 60 on the steeper mountain passes (there is one pass between SLC and Moab that is 7400 ft, I topped that one at 50 mph - on all the other passes I was able to do 55+).

I got 9 MPG on the way down. The 2 F350's got 11 MPG, but they were paying about 50-60 cents more per gallon, which pretty much wiped out the difference. They did have a longer range than me, due to the 38 gallon tanks and better mileage. This isn't a big deal to me, because I really can't go more than 250 miles between stops, even if my truck could...

On the way back, I was by myself, and drove slower - kept it down to 65, and didn't push quite as hard on the passes, took most of them at 50-55. This bumped my gas mileage up to about 12.5 MPG.

Personally I think that is awesome mileage for a gasser pulling almost 7K lbs of stuff...

that is great pulling 7000 lbs with a gaser.
My 08 harley davidson 5.4L gets a little over 700 kms a tank (empty though). My last 2 trucks were diesel and I don't miss them at all with this new truck.

It seems the be the consensus that if your actually working your truck, the bigger trucks and bigger engines do better. Many have said on the SD forum that have upgraded to 250's that they get as good or better mileage towing, and a bigger truck to boot. And I'm not talking diesel either. I'm contemplating a new truck for my daily driver, will soon have a 40 mile trip one way to work (highway). Most estimates I've seen on the very few SD owners that dont haul a lot on the highway, and drive modestly, are they are still within 2mpg of a 5.4 F150, getting like 15-17 on the highway. IMO 2MPG isnt worth getting a 150 over a 250, and with the options I'm looking at (manual 6 speed, manual lock in hubs, manual xfer case) and higher rebate, the cost of the SD is actually almost the same as the 150. I'm still having trouble seeing much advantage to the 150 unless gas prices really double...

Sorry, I think I am just trying to talk myself into a SD

I just traded my 04 F250 diesel for a 04 F150 with a 5.4 also. I sold my 5th wheel and really didnt need the diesel for towing and gas is a little cheaper.

I went from an 07 F350 4x4 Dually with the 6.0 to an 07 F150 4x4x 5.4. Big down size. I do not regret it. I didn't need to tow a big trailer anymore and it was a pain to drive in traffic and park around here. And with them being so popular for theft I didn't like parking that far out. I do miss the extra room.

There is one thing that will probably make me never buy a 2008 or older F150. The 4 speed transmission. It's just an upgrade of the 4R70W in my 2000, and I hate it.

The transmission options in the SD are what make it desireable to me. 5 speed Torqshift or 6 speed manual with all the engines.

Ford is way overdue in dropping the 4 speed autos based on the AOD of the 80s.

I cant believe this is a downsize, is anyone looking at the price at the pump???? I don't drive my F150 hardly at all anymore, the price of gas is nuts!!!! I drive a 96 chevy corsica, not a fashion statment but at 30mpg, it will not get attention at the pump. Dont get me wrong, I'm not getting rid of my F150 or my hot rod but every day driving is much better with less than $5 bucks going out to whoever is getting rich off of these stupid prices!!

I just downsized from my 2006 F250 CC 4x2, 5.4, Auto into a 2008 F150 CC, 4x4, CC. On the F250 I saw a best of 14.5 on a trip (I even had a tonneau cover too) on the F150 with less than 1000 miles on the odo I saw 16.38 for my last tank.

Not a huge increase but, every little bit helps. I would have kept the F250 but, I missed 4wd too much to deal with 2wd and 14.5 mpg.

I went from a 98 F150 5.4 to a 2004 Ranger with the 4.0 and 4.10's. It was a nice truck to play around off road, but to small. I had it 6 months and traded it in on a 2004 F150 Lariat. The ranger only got 17mpg, the F150 gets 13mpg. I would rather pay a little more in gas for the bigger, nicer truck.

Nope, I actually just upsized from a Mustang GT to a 7 passenger SUV with a Hemi

Gas may be expensive, but I prefer to ride in comfort and safety. I'll just stop getting my Starbucks every day if I need to tighten up around the belt with money.
