1987 ZF5 460 onto a 1973 460

I got the tranny and the motor, but what do I have to do to get them 'happily' together? The 1987 460's were externally balanced and my engine is internally balanced. I think I read somewhere that I need to get the flywheel to a zero balance for it to work correctly. What else do I have to do?

thanks

Wait more than 3 min....

What's it going into? The ZF needs a hydraulic clutch. Drive shaft, cross member, speedo hook, make sure your trans uses the cable not electronic or you'll have to retro an electronic speedo.

4wd or 2wd versions, watchout....

thanks hoss

I am specifically asking about the flywheel to motor match. I think there may be some spline issues, but I handle that. I have a complete 1987 f350 with the motor and tranny and I am wanting to put it in my 1978 f100 with a 1973 460. My engine is internally balanced and the flywheel for the zf came off of a motor that is externally balanced. Does that matter?

Sorry. Thanks for the correction.

On the flywheel, try posting the question in the BB 385 engine forums. There is lots of traffic here and this has been on long enough for an answer (usually) so I'd try the engine area--more engine specific traffic.

Good luck.

You can have the 87 flywheel rebalanced to be the same as the 73s at a good machine shop.
