Personally I'm not a big fan of the LED lights. Yea, sure they are brighter, safer, etc (if they are aimed correctly) I just don't like the look of numerous small, intense lights making up the whole. I'd rather have the nice warm diffuse glow of the whole lens area lighting up evenly.....

If you are building your own LED lights there has to be LED's pointed in all the directions you want the light to be seen.
If all the lights are aimed straight thats where they will be seen, a few degrees off in any direction and you see Squat.
Or, alternatively, diffused by the lens...

I think they`re kinda of neat, certainly more than good enough for now. I have these same lights on my gravel trucks, trailers and I was thinking of using them myself.

Check out you local truck parts supplier or automotive supplier, There are a lot of nicer units out there for not much more money. I do agree however, there are a good temporary solution until you decide on the look you are after. With the utmost respect, if it's the farmer look your after, then they will fit the bill....

speaking of lights, Ross brings up a good point about people not paying attention. It got me thinking-Have any of you guys installed a rear brake light in your cab above the rear window? or alternatly you could buy a relativly small and cheap LED from a safety light supply place and mount it on the inside of cab on the bottom edge of rear window so you don't go cutting holes in the cab. and it wouldn't really even be noticable from outside until you hit the brakes. ?

I'm thinking of mounting such a light on the top of the front panel of the bed. Put a bracket that extends up under the rear window. No holes, easily removable. But it would not be an LED, just not the correct "look".
Thats a great idea, would the bracket be painted to match the body or black? I think it should match the body paint personally.
Ideally, yes. But faced with using up the very little leftover body paint I have vs. a quick shot with glass black out of a rattle can, it will probably be the rattle can. (Although New Ford Blue engine paint is very close, I may use that.
Same here, grew up on a farm and now live in the City. There was no offence intended toward farmers or the lights on the OP's picture. I just think there are many other options out there that are just as economical and would look a lot nicer in my opinion. I just used the farm reference because that is what we used when building trailers, truck decks and what not on the farm because they were cheap and readily available at nearly any Princess Auto or automotive supply store.

No offence taken here. I used these lights because I had them in stock for replacement on the heavy trucks that I repair. They will do for now, that is until I come up with something that I like better. The bumper is also not to my liking, just have to find something that is.....
The reverse lights are of the same style of sealed beam clearance light, except they are badged as utility lights.
I've always been undecided on whether to keep the shields, or do something else. I like what you did was thinking about doing something similar. I got the idea from Chip Foose's 56 truck. He did a nice job with the bumper and lights on the rear. http://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gall...188940.520.390

I run blue dots in my taillights. I have yet to see an LED that looks good with blue dots. They just don't work well unless you have the bulb lined up directly behind the blue dot lense. I do run a small LED third brake light in my rear window for safety. If you don't use LED there you may as well not run a third brake light since those small bulbs used in the early third brake lights were hardly visible...
