I am considering buying a 2008 f-250 king ranch with the 6.4l twin turbo and while I was talking about it with a friend that is a mechanic he mentioned that a lot of people are having major problems with the 6.4l up to and including having to take the whole body off to fix the turbos??
I have been searching online looking for forums with people complaining about them but I cant seem to find any?
he even said that people are buying a new '08 and putting the older 7.3l in it because its more reliable.
Any help would be greatly appreciated since I dont want to drop 40-50k on a truck that will have these kinds of problems.
there are not alot of people with issues. i would say for everyone complaining about problems, 5 to 10 people are happy. you most likely wont hear people being happy with their trucks on sites like this. the 6.4 will have its share of issues, and thats that. all my work consists of are diesels and we have only had maybe 8 with major issues ( pumps, oil cooler, ypipes ), and all the rest have been minor (egr valves, injectors, programming ). there is a learning curve to these like with the growing oil level and the white smoke out the tailpipe, both which are normal 99% of the time. like i said, these trucks will have its issues, but dont let cab removal be a burden. i have pulled 4 cabs all have gone with no more issues. as ong as you have a competent dealer there shouldnt be anything to worry about.

6.4ing IF they tear up
thanks for the reply. I expect sometimes there will be problems with any vehicle I mean its a pretty complex piece of equipment. The way my buddy made it sound I should stay away from the 6.4l and thats why I wanted to ask around a little.
Just from searching the net a little if there were the amount of problems he is talking about I would think the net would be flooded with complaints, the fact that it seems like just regular talk makes me think its not as bad as he makes it out to be or he has simply had a lot of bad luck.
My 2008 is the ONLY Ford of the many I've owned that I have complaints about. It's parked at home and no one drives it and I'm awaiting the judge's lemon decision. Try searching just this 2008 forum with words like "lemon" and "junk". These are words others have also used to describe these new trucks. I truly believe the newer ones (like mine, built in 2006) just have problems. I will buy another one just like it.

I'm a little confused by your response. You said the 2008 is the only one you have had problems with and then in the last line you say, "I truly believe newer ones (like mine built in 2006) just have problems. I will buy another one just like it??
so have you had the problems with a 2008 or a 2006? and if its so bad you are awaiting a judges decision why would you buy another? Maybe I misread your post but Im confused?? lol
When Ford first advertised the new 2008 Ford F450, it was in mid-2006. As soon as my dealership got the paperwork to order one, in November 2006, I ordered one. It was built and shipped in December 2006. It is a 2008. It was one of the first off the assembly line. I did not commit to it until March 2007, because Ford had not yet produced the towing specs. Those came out in February 2007, and I finalized my purchase of my 2008 F450 in early March, 2007. It first started acting up 1700 miles later. Many trucks that I've owned are actually produced the year or two years before the model year they are because I order them as soon as I am able to.
I just read the second half of your question. I would buy another one as long as it was produced THIS YEAR. I truly believe that Ford may have worked out the problems they had with the ones produced early on. The people posting on this forum with 'newer' trucks will testify that theirs work fine. I really believe that mine was one of the first produced and they simply didn't know where to put all the bolts. The truck was new from top to bottom and inside out. I was a guneau pig, sorry to say. There is not another truck out there that will out perform my truck as far as towing, etc. and STILL look like a pickup truck. I don't want to go to International or Sterling because I still want to be able to go grocery shopping in it too.
Got a Job 1 (July 2007 buid date) and no issues sofar what ever. Just this recall: FUEL TANK STOPPER BRACKET INSTALLATION Recall Code: 08C04 I love this truck, just like thousands of other people, while a few had some issues and even fewer had some "big" issues like you'll find out in this forum. Only downside.. it's thirsty
I just bought a new one a month ago, and I have had no problems. I love the truck. My best friend has had his for about 6 months and has not had any problems either. people complain about the fuel economy, but I am getting 13-13.5 mpg, and I have about 400-500 lbs in the back. The mpg is figured, not going by the computer.
Buy one and you'll love it.
My '08 F-450 came in about 6 weeks ago; I have ~2400 miles on it and absolutely love it. No problems at all. I am averaging around 10 - 11 mpg, but that should improve with a few more thousand miles.

My dad is a Ford Certified Diesel Tech, and has done 1 dpf replacment, and 3 cab off repairs (which aren't a big deal at all, Ford designed it that way) for a high pressure fuel pump, factory screw up all of them were produced on the same day, like the Vins # are 1-2 apart.

Zero warranty issues for me to date. I have a job#1 truck built in April 07, purchased in August 07. I have almost 17k miles on it now. Only trips to the shop are for oil & filter changes. I've read on this board where a few folks have had an unacceptable number of quality and repetitive mechanical failures and it seems that if it rains, it pours. I'm sorry to hear a few are just getting hit hard by probs.
I either tow a 5th wheel on camping trips or a bass boat to the lake practically every weekend beginning in Feb through October and it has been a great truck so far.
