Started tearing down my 71 to begin a full restortation.

Quick history. I'll be the 3rd owner but the title will read second owner. My wifes cousin picked the truck up from the original owner with the intention of making it a work truck for his landscaping business. He kept it for 3 months until he realized how expensive it would be to bring the truck back. Apparently the engine fires but I haven't attempted it yet. I believe it last ran in 2002. He says its a Custom, I have no clue and really don't care since I'm not shooting for orginal with it.

Started taking pictures with the bed already off but you get the idea. The truck is pretty much a junker but we wanted something to do with it rather than just trash it. Came with a 3 speed manual and 240 V-6. None of which we'll keep. We basically got it down to the chassis and will completely disassemble it to the bare frame sometime in the next two weeks. No budget is set and no hard plan in place, I do have a ballpark timeframe of 4 years. Its really just myself and my brother in law trying to tackle the project with limited tools and very limited knowledge. Suffice to say we'll be looking for the internet to carry us to the promise land.

Things we are certain about at this point.

1. We aren't dropping it. Gonna keep it looking somewhat stock with larger wheels and tires all the way around and probably one size larger in the back than the front just to give it a moderate stance.

2. Power steering and front disk brake conversion.

3. 5 speed and crate motor, this will be a daily driver. After looking around it seems the later generation Mustang 5 speeds are a good fit (Borg Warners) around 1200 bucks and the cheapest most affordable crate motor we found was a 351 for about 3k. I found out pretty quick that Ford Crates are pretty pricey.

Couple of questions if anyone knows.

1. Is there an AIM book or full build sheets? I haven't found anything more than the typical Autozone chiltons and so forth. It would be nice to be able to reference something during the rebuild rather than tapping the web with ever question we have.

2. Outside of media blasting is there an easy way to cut through the rust and grime on the chassis? Chemical compound or anything that would help. We had planned on wire wheels and WD-40 then a good bath but that would be awefully time consuming. Any proven methods you guys have used would really help.

3. POR -15 or Rust Bullet or other? I was pretty sold on the POR -15 because thats seems to be the chassis paint of choice from forum to forum but I'm hearing good things about Rust Bullet and there seems to be about 4 or 5 addition prep steps with the POR.

4. Gas tank. This ones in pretty good condition and we can easily keep it but I'd like to know if any of you guys are using aftermarket tanks in the bed or other locations with success.

5. Leaf Springs. These are pretty banged up. Do people still rebend these or am I stuck eating the cost for some new ones?

6. Rearend identification? Whats the best way to determine if it needs to be rebuilt?

I will update each time we work on the truck if anyone is interested and I'm going to go ahead and keep tabs on the cost envolved for the build too. This will be tabulated at the end of each update.

Here are some pics to get us started and I will add some additional pics at the end of the day or first thing in the morning. Quality isn't too good but the next round of pics should be better.

PLEASE DON'T HESITATE TO ADD ANYTHING TO THIS THREAD I NEED AS MUCH INFORMATION AS POSSIBLE.

Grand total: 200.00 Even. Truck and some basic tools. 3 days and 22 hours total of work. 3 12 packs total and we're well aware that we have now bitten off more than we can chew.

Nice start! I have restored quite a few vehicles,and the tear-down is fun,at least to me. I really believe another doner truck-and they can be found cheap--may be a good idea. 4 yrs. may turn into 7 yrs,and do you have enough room? I have known people to tear-down very well a vehicle and then it just sits. I have a feeling you are serious.
I just rebuilt a 1971 sport custom longbed from Virginia--it is on my gallery...I chose to only rebuild only what warranted rebuilding--and got some slack from doing this from another fter because he says --wow you did that fast--5months!!!
It is NOT a full frame-off restore. But looks very good. After restoring for 30 plus yrs you learn to figure what direction to go. You do not have to do a total resto to have a great truck. I think you will have a great resto as you seem dedicated. I usually now--only restore what area that needs it.
I have usually done near stock restorations,but am not a purist. I however do not like the slammed look--as it ruins the use of the truck. JMHO. I am better at body and paint-but mechanical work is not bad with new parts,etc.
What color? 351 would be nice--mine is a 302 and great gas mileage. --good luck and stay dedicated

Thanks, the real purpose behind a full frame restoration is the fact that we can do it at our own pace. I have no real need for the truck no real purpose so I'm not worried about losing motivation on it because I refuse to turn it into work or bring any kind of urgency to the table on it. 4 years is great but if it takes 7 then so be it but once I get down to the last 7 or 8k on it I'll just pull out a small signature loan to seal the deal.

Right now its at my father in law/brother in laws place for the time being. That will change at the turn the of the year when I move. We already have two acres to put a house on and I'll be putting up a 40x40 garage that will house our little shop nicely.

A donor truck will come in handy at some point but I'm not against ordering a ton of new parts where needed. Playing that by ear.

Colors are still up in the air but we have thought about a three tier look like

Silver roof and posts

Dull greyish blue for the hood and body

Matching silver down below

Yeah I live in Corpus so not too far, I'm always in SA since I'm from there and have tons of family still there. Do you got some pictures. I'd love to see your work.

Wow! I didn't think it would be that rusty from Texas! BishopRyan and billemc you guys are lucky to live in the great state of Texas! I have brother who lives near New Braunfels so I have been to both of your cities several times. It looks like you will need a radiator support.
When you get a new one make sure you get one for a V-8. The radiator opening is larger. Best of luck with your project.

It really shouldn't be that rusty from TX but I live in Corpus on the coast and thats where this truck has been its whole life. Thanks for the heads up on the radiator support.

JMO, but when you get the rest of the components removed and have just the bare frame think I'd take it someplace and have it sandblasted... Yeah, it costs a few bucks, but it's well worth the expense when you get it back and can do a thorough inspection for cracks or signs of overstressed crossmembers, etc... Then start measuring and make sure everything is square and true. No reason to waste a bunch of time and money on a frame that is tweaked, full of cracks, or rusted through in spots...

Oh yeah, then the two rules of any restoration or Hot Rod project....

1. It's going to cost more then you thought.
2. It's going to take longer then you thought...

Not trying to discourage you, just a few things I've learned over the years....

Hmm...is that a 3 speed? Floor shift or column? Bolt up to a 360/390? Everyone always takes those out and goes to an auto like the P.O. did in my truck. I want the original 3 speed back in mine. Just like the old stuff like that. I hear they have problems thought with..shift tubes? Your cab looks a little rough on top. Getting a donor cab from another truck or going to try and repair that one? Any plans on what engine you are going to use? Good luck...looks like fun.

I'm doing the same to a 72 Sport Custom. I got so crazy buying parts before breaking it down. Dumb on my part for not taking the time to see what to get or do first and after spending alot and not searching is exspensive. LMC got about 1500 and wasn't really happy with product. I now go to Dennis Carpenter,ebay,Mikes truck salvage. Mike has a 72 cab that is in really good shape. I was going to get it but i found one on ebay for 200.00 and i picked it up for a total 325.00 the 125.00 was the gas going there and back. I believe he wants 400.00 but it's something i learned the hard way. You got to weigh out the time,labor,cost for materials against getting a new part or a better used one. Dennis Carpenter also has visual steps on replaceing vent window seals,and door parts. Well good luck and just have fun.
