97 econoline 5.4 conking out

My 1997 econoline 5.4 keeps keeps quitting when i start it cold. after a few times it keeps running and as long as it warm its ok. New plugs at 1oo thousand and has new air filter ,any ideas before I take it to the only dealer for 150 miles and I know whats going to happen, they charged me $700 to change the plugs and trans fluid. From now on I am trying to do the simple thing myself. any ideas will be apreciated.

I'd start by pulling codes, autozone will do it free.
Or get a reader on ebay. You need a type II reader.

I'd suspect coolant temp sensor, the sensor tells the computer the engine is cold and sets a rich mixture til it warms up.
Dies it run at high idle when started cold?

fuel filter? That is where I start if no codes are being thrown and it has not been done within 25,000 miles. One bad fill up of cheap gas with water in it can do it.

btw: That engine in that van is not a simple tune-up, plugs wise, consider the money well spent. If you ever messed up a plug thread putting a new head in is very costly.

rebocardo, thanks for the support, I went out and got a filter but didn't know that you need a special tool to release the fitting , now have that and will proceed, probably cheaper to take it to the shop but you might as well learn something in the process. thanks again
