Do you by chance have the VIN of the original car? From what I can see, an engine
code of H was available in 1971 LTD Broughams but all I can determine is that H
represents a 351. Or, perhaps somebody such as AllData can tell you what exact
351 engine the H represents. My father might still have an early-70s Motor manual,
that might say something, too. I'll hafta ask him.... Or, I wonder where and what year
*my* Motor manual is. (My mom had a 1970 Torino with a 351C 4V.)

hi,
unfortunatly i dont have the original VIN,... i bought this car in the mid 90's and at that time i was "sure" it was a 351c....ive only started questioning it today when i wrote my post about headers...ive had the motor and trans in the truck in a "rough state" as i set the rest of the drivetrain in place ect....now im pulling it all apart and gathering parts little by little... again now im questioning what i have.,..and what to order parts for....
i read somewhere today about a casting near the back of the block near the oil pressure switch? i cant read anything real well...yet i do see near the switch a large C w/ some sort of design in the middle of it? ..
ill have the engine back out in the next few months (hopefully) to clean up ...paint ect...but again the block is pretty scaly on the outside...where are the numbers that would identify for sure? again i wanna verify before i order many things....
......light bulb just went off in my head...mid 90's i put an edelbrock intake on this engine ....cam and lifters.. sprockets and chains...ide hafta dig to find the reciepts...yet....maybe the easiest would be the intake model number?? does the intake from a 351C fit the 400 engine?

ok... so i just crawled all the way in my engine compartment...my edelbrock "performer" intake says 351 2v... and it appears that casting on the back of the block near the oil pres switch is a very large C w/ an F in the middle of it......... again... 1971 LTD Brougham... FMX trans.

The fastest & best info on the M-blocks I know of is Bubba's M-Block Ford V8 Workshop
take a look at that, maybe you can at least *exclude* the M-block.

My Motor book is 1980 and seems to only go back to about 1975. Still hafta ask my
father about his....

Look at the ridge behind the dizzie. It's barely there on a 351C, about an 1" high on the others.

my 400 has the same casting due to the fact that some 351m/400 are clevelands also, but yeah its defenitivly a 351c, now the fmx is bigger than the c4 but smaller than a c6, so you should be able to get away with the c6 header setup, and its only my opinion im not really sure what other clearences issues these trannies have....

well...... thats a relief..not that it would have been a big deal.. just would have felt alittle foolish after calling it a 351 all these yrs...so...i guess maybe ill try getting a header set up for the C6 trans...i was hoping to just find a set of headers for the LTD seeing as i have almost the exact set up...meaning im still using the factory LTD trans xmember ect..
just a little leary of ordering something that wont come close....also...its been 20 yrs since ive bought headers....are thier still good vrses bad headers? this is in an old p/u w/ HUGE front fenders...im not going to be thrilled w/ changing header gaskest on a regular basis......thoughts???
