What is it about Ford...

What is it about Ford seatbelt buckles? I had to replace my drivers side twice on my TurboCoupe and now the Aero buckle has failed. It looks like they shrink the plastic cover over the strap so I'll need to find a blue one or dye another to match the interior. Meanwhile I'm buckling up to the passenger side and there's nothing for a rider.
My '95 escort has those funky motorized belts

I have never had a problem with a Ford buckle, and we have a lot of them. There are the two in my van, the 7 in my mom's van, the 15 in my dad's Clubwagon, the 3 more in my dad's Ranger. None of them have ever had a broken buckle.

Mine was fixable, I had one go. Not sure what version you have, mine has the push button on the face of the chromed clasp housing. There is a piece of spring steel inside ( it can break) which returns the clasp which engages the buckle. You can drill through from the back of the housing & insert a small spring which will do the same job, you then need to drill & tap two screws or use self tappers for a retainer plate. Thats all thats needed.
In my case I could not get a used one from the junkyard since they had run out of torx bits & could not remove the old ones anyway! They rust solid & bit of a job to remove them.

Never had an issue with a Ford Buckle.

Now those crappy auto-seat belts found in the late 80s/early 90s Tempo/Escorts were POS, they would not make 30k mi before breaking. But I do not blame Ford for those, the Feds demanded SRS systems in all vehicles and it was a way to keep costs down compared to air bags.

I still blame the Feds for that.

mine just failed. I have been just forcing it and it wouldn't clasp shut. I would wiggle the male end into the floor mount and then it would finally connect. Yesterday I looked into the floor mount. Just under the spring clip I saw a piece of plastic. I looked into the pas. side to see how it compared and there wasn't any piece of plastic. I'm thinking something got into it, but I will unscrew it from the floor just to make sure.

When I used to drive a Chevy Nova in high school I could even get my seat belt unlatched. I had just pulled up in my folks driveway and had to honk the horn (1983-before cell phones). The floor bolt holding the seat belt was hidden because of me being in the seat. My father went ahead and cut the belt. We took it apart to inspect. we found a penny in it. Crazy huh? What if I would have needed to escape? You just never know. A penny for your thoughts is a saying-my penny was speaking volumes-it had me trapped!
