i have a clunk when accelerating and breaking. it sounds like u joints to me so i got under there and checked to see if there was any play in the drive shaft. i didnt see any but i did notice that when i spun the drive shaft (trans in neutral, wheels on the ground), that the yoke in the rear end would spin almost or about 1/8th of a revolution before it would stop. it seems a little more than normal to me. there was no measurable play in the yoke that i could feel. any ideas?
A few years ago my 93' would clunk about three times when slowing down or pulling out.Turns out the slip joint needed greased and that took away my clunk then. This past year I started to get a whine and a hard clunk(much worse than slip joint clunk) in rear end and turns out carrier bearing in rear end was shot.Had all bearings and axle bearings replaced.Usually you will get bad vibration from u-joints from my experience.Take it to a rear end shop before you desytroy your gears, I'm glad I did.I only waited a few days before doing so.
ok, the slip yoke thing seems to be pretty common for clunking so i am going to try that first. there is no noise whatsoever but i have decided to park it until i solve this problem.
im sorry i should have been more clear on that. there is no noise like howling, whining or grinding at any speed. just the initial clunk which i can feel and hear.
does it feel like its under your feet? Check your radius arm bushings. When they get worn the radius arm moves up and down (during braking and accelerating) in the bracket. It will eventually wobble out the bracket (causing the clunking to happen more).
