4wd not working

I have a 97 F150. When I switch the 4wd lever it doesnt do anything. The 4wd light which should light up by the speedometer doesnt come on. I checked the fuses to see if the problem was a blown fuse and they all seem to be ok. Does anyone know what the problem could be and how to fix it?

Do you have the 4x4 lever shifter or Knob on the dash? We have an 01' F-150 manual shift( lever) 4x4,,it was the "oil switch" the electric plug on the front of the transfer case, has 1 or 2 wires to it,,to test it,,,,pull the plug,,stick a wire in the plug, ground other end to tranny ribs or case,, w/ vise grips,,see if light comes on,,,or if 4x4 works,,if it works then replace that switch/plug in transfere case.,,,Mark

On the front of the differential there is a plastic cover. Under that is a vacuum motor that actuates the 4x4 within the differential. There are a few things to check here, first look at the vacuum hoses and make sure they aren't cracked or broken. Also look at the lever on the motor and make sure it moves freely, clean and lube the lever.

could also be the shift motor on the transfercase...you can usually get these at a wrecker for cheap.

I would also lean towards the shift motor on the T-case. Your light isn't coming on means that the T-case isn't making it's move into 4H. Certain conditions have to met in order for the GEM module to turn the light on. I would start by taking a hammer and "LIGHTLY" tapping on the shift case motor.
