What a 71 Ranger XLT came with back then?

I'm thinking of buying a 71 Ranger XLT. It has a 360 and manual tranny. The pics the guy has up shows a column shifter....did the 71's still have column shifters and if so what speeds did the manual trannys have in 71, 3 and 4 speed or just 3? Also would the Ranger XLT automatically have power steering and brakes? It has stock air conditioning. It's real clean and looks like no rust at all. You could eat off the engine bay it's so clean. He' wants a little above 5k for it, the mileage says around 70k on the truck it self and motor was rebuilt about 12k ago.

Like I said, it looks clean and straight, I'd just like to know what some options would have been found on the 71 and what options the Ranger XLT package put on it. Thanks.

The Ranger XLT package was mostly dressup - bright trim around windshield, back window, wheel openings. Had wide molding down the bumpside with woodgrain insert and a woodgrain tailgate panel. The seat, door trim, and headliner were upgraded.

Mechanically, they were like the other series, with two 6-cyl and three V-8s available, with (as your truck) a 3-speed manual on the column, 3-spd auto column, or 4-speed manual, floor shift.

Red face A/C & trim

THe A/C is a dealer add-on. If you want you can verify the trim package by using comparing it with those offered specifically for the Ranger XLT 1970+ in the Dennis Carpenter or LMC Truck Catalog. Also there should be carpet and a headliner, this in addition to what limegold described.

Also this is the first time I've come across a 360 w 3sp on the column. Previously I've only seen 3 on the tree with a 6 cyl. Decode the VIN to make sure that it hasn't been monkeyed with.

I bought a 71 Ranger XLT a few years ago for parts. It had a 360 with 3-speed on the column and factory-installed air conditioner.

And I would bet that the 70k is more like 170k miles. Those engines usually didn't need a rebuild at 50 + k miles. My best friend had 250k on his 69 and it was never apart and still running strong.
My 70 390 has 100k and runs like a new one with only the changeout of the timing gear at 100k. Both these engines are Southern California though.
I guess it all depends on the climate that it has been in. Cold starts can wear them out quick.

There were two different air conditioners offered for these trucks.

The deluxe factory installed unit, and the economy dealer installed unit.

That's the "economy air" conditioner pictured in that brochure.

The deluxe air unit features 'wood' grained inserts, and a glove box.

The deluxe air uses a combo heater A/C plenum chamber. This unit was so large that the glove box liner had to be removed so the unit would fit behind the dash.

So the new glove box is part of the air conditioner head unit which bolts to and follows the contour of the dash...all the way across.

The deluxe unit runs all the way across the bottom of the dash with one register on the left side, then a "wood" grained insert underneath the column followed by another register.

The controls come next with another register above them (the unit is staggered at this point) then the glove box, and another wood grained panel followed by one of two things.

The 1968/69 units have a fourth register in line with the third, the 1970/72 units have a large register on the right side.
